Quest for the Ivory-Billed (Choctawhatchee River Basin)

As I slipped off into the swamp bottoms along the Choctawhatchee River I become bedazzled by the sights sounds and smells.

Both you and Scott have commented about the spider web photo...there were two spider web photos. I suspect you both were referring to the second in the series with the spider on the web....am I correct?

If I could get someone to pay me to chase woodpeckers around the woods I would.

Where I lived in the mountains was within hearing distance of the Cartecay river. My piece of heaven was surrounded by the Rich Mountain Wilderness Area and was off limits to all hunters.

Walking up the side of my mountain I once saw a very large woodpecker, I thought was an Ivory Billed. It was very large and flew around me as I walked. A short distance away it landed and I remember the size of it. It was from 14 to 16 inches tall. It watched me as I watched it. It had just rained and with the sounds of the river off in the distance it was a pristine moment for me. I'm not sure if it was same type of bird that Booga is looking for, but it was a sight to see.

If found the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker will look similar to the red-pileated pictured below

The Birds!

While we are on the subject of birds....I was sitting in my kitchen this morning at about 6:30 eating breakfast and suddenly outside the window a great blue heron landed on our neighbor's roof. It walked down the roof and hopped into their neighbor's yard. I hope they don't have a koi pond!

I've lived here for 21 years now and I've never seen one of these birds there before. In fact, I've only seen them near the beach or at the nature preserve in the Sepulveda Dam Basin.

You saw a bird like this in the valley?

Yikes! This thing looks like it could eat Buddy!

Yup. I love this photo, too... to me, this kind of thing helps to prove the existence of God. How can something so small do something so big... know how to do it... and even know to do it in order to survive?

Really cool.
