Interesting note about our backs. Since the first day of Junior High School (Bancroft Junior High for me) we were told in our posture class the value of sitting up straight. We had spine tests to check for scoliosis and lowerdosis each year.Wouldn't it be nice if someone would get all this health news and advice straight once and for all? Everyday something else.
Don't sit up straight - for your back's sake
by Brigitte Dale
We've been told to sit up straight since childhood, but now it turns out the best thing for our back is to lean back slightly while sitting in a chair for extended periods of time. Scottish and Canadian researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to discover that sitting up perfectly straight puts more strain on the back than leaning back slightly. Slouching or leaning forward also puts a strain on the back, specifically the lower spine.
So, if you spend extended periods of time sitting at a desk or computer, try leaning back in your chair slightly, at and angle around 125 to 135 degrees.
