Prince Harry Prepares for Possible Iraq Duty

AP
LONDON (Jan. 13) - A British newspaper reported Sunday that Prince Harry was scheduled to begin final training for deployment to Iraq with his army regiment, but the Defense Ministry said no decision had been made on whether he would be deployed.

The News of the World said the 22-year-old prince, who is third in line to the throne, would take part in a two-day pre-deployment course which includes instruction in basic Arabic phrases.

Harry, known as "Cornet Wales" by his Blues and Royals regiment, has trained to command 11 soldiers and four Scimitar tanks.

A Defense Ministry spokesman said the Blues and Royals were among a number of regiments being considered for deployment to Iraq in April.

"Even if the regiment is selected, it is not the case that the entire regiment would be deployed. If his unit was selected, it would be down to the unit commander to determine whether it would be appropriate for Harry to go," the spokesman said, speaking on customary condition of anonymity in line with policy.

Prince William, currently training as a troop leader within the Blues and Royals, cannot be deployed to war zones because he is second in line to the British crown.

Britain has 7,000 troops based in southern Iraq, but plans to reduce its numbers in 2007. Treasury Chief Gordon Brown, who is expected to succeed Tony Blair as prime minister, said last Sunday that several thousand soldiers would withdraw by the end of the year.

I would say it should be his option. I think it would demonstrate his character and constitution to stand with his men and face the dangers and reality of war. What more could you ask of a leader than to stand beside you in harm's way. That would be a high mark on his resume as far as I am concerned.

Definitely agree here... but he would most definitely be a PRIME target by the enemy.

There is substantial risk involved if he does go to war. For some reason I keep have having visions of King Aurthur. If he goes his service would be in the finest traditions of chivalry and bravery. What message would be sent to the families of all with service people overseas if England's nobility has one of their own standing in harms way as one of the defenders of freedom.

I personally would not like to see this young prince, third in line to the throne, go to war.

In days of yore, at least in movies, you would see the kings riding ahead of the warriors. First the little drummer boys.

I was so happy my sons did not have to risk their lives. What mom would.

If he didn't get killed to prove a point. He is not a leader now. He is so young. He doesn't NEED a resume, he was born with one from day one
