Some friends of Carol and myself from the forums at Backpacker.com were backpacking in the Grand Canyon last week. A tragedy occurred in the Canyon and a member of the group did not survive. The details are posted at http://forums.backpacker.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/852

When I venture outdoors I take risks. I accept those risks and take precautions to try to minimize the dangers but the dangers do exist. I remember vividly an incident happening on a kayak trip that I put together and lead in which an accident happened that could have turned tragic. Luckily everyone survived unscathed and most of those involved were oblivious to the danger they were in. I think because I was a witness to the accident and was trapped upstream away from it and unable to directly assist that perhaps I had the greatest scare as I had to overcome obstacles to get there and to count heads and realize that everyone survived...that perhaps in this instant I had the greatest scare.
I can't fathom the pain, the horror, and the loss that they went through with this tragc incident in the Canyon. I don't want to sensationalize the tragedy but I did want to let you all know about what happened. I think everyone is still a little stunned and in shock.
My continued thoughts and prayers, condolences and deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends.
