Fireworks Anxiety and Dogs

The older K.C. gets...8 1/2 now...the more anxiety he seems to get from fireworks and thunder. He accidently locked himself in a bathroom the other day during a thunderstorm. He is lying at my feet now shivering from the anxiety as fireworks pop outside.

Last night I slept on the floor so I could keep an arm over him as he shivered in fear from the noise. I think in the future I am going to see if the vet will give him a sedative to help out.

Do any of you have or have you had dogs with anxiety issues like this?

Ashley was always scared out of her mind by fireworks. I couldn't even walk her in the evening on July 4th. This was my first 4th with Minnie, and even with all the booms and banging going on outside, it didn't seem to phase her one bit. Even the cats didn't seem bothered by it. Usually, in past years, they would hide in a cabinet or under the bed. This time they were all out playing like nothing was going on.

Hi, Robert,

We had the same thing with Sophie. She would get very scared by fireworks or thunder. After the Northridge earthquake, we had hundreds of aftershocks that went on for months. SShe was very scared of those as well.

I know a lot of people get a mild sedative for the pets from their vet. We never did that, but we considered it.
