Ok, here is a question that has multiple answers....

What to you, is the BEST "food value" food that you can think of? Meaning, for the dollar spent, the amount of food that you get/how tasty is it/how filling/how nutritious is it?

We can certainly learn from the poorer people of the world that don't have the resources for anything they want, so those people have to look for the "best" they can get for the money..well, we too can learn from such folk..afterall, everybody eats.

(My own answer to follow)

OK, here is my own answer...chicken thighs. They are dirt cheap, have plenty of protein, taste GREAT...and because they are higher in fat than say, the breast, it is real hard to screw up cooking em!

Beans....dried beans. Not expensive....loaded with nutrition can be made to taste oh so good and a little makes a lot when cooked.

Well, mac & cheese and ramen have always been known for being popular among poor college students who can't afford much else. I'd think couscous would be right up there, too.

WELL....not only is that not a great food value but..

..I have never cared for the Cadbury line of chocolates. Something about the taste doesn't sit well with me.

I love a Hershey bar..and also, Trader Joes sells these hunks of chocolate that are really good and pure and great.

Awhile back, the wife and I went to a Korean market and got some ramen. They have these "flavor packets", so ok..in they go.

Turns out the Koreans like thier ramen HOT..spicy hot! Now, I am a fan of spicy heat but this stuff sent even me into sweats!

Grew up on hams hocks and lima beans.....On a good day we had corn bread with it. Throw in a carrot and some celery if you've got it. Nothing fancy....the ham hock gives it the flavor.

And of course black beans and rice cooked with tomatoes until the rice is done.

I was going for the one ingredient that is inexpensive and nutritious not a recipe....

Raise your hand if you can honestly say you haven't gained any weight over the holidays. That's my goal in January...to say that. Anybody want to join me? Its just food......enjoy it in small quantities and leave some behind. (talking to myself)

I've seen lots of other different flavored packets, too, but the hot ones are my favorites. Or, I should say were my favorites. I haven't had the stuff in many years...

Amazing how tastes are so different. It certainly has a lot to do ith how you grow up. My Dad, being a Brit... well, I was exposed to a lot of Cadbury... and, therefore, I LOVE IT.

On my mother's end of the food spectrum, she introduced me to a concoction called "Halvah." I am sure Larry is familiar, as it is a Jewish staple in much the same way a Challah or Maneschevitz wine (sp).

Halvah is a weird sesame-seed-based food. Soft texture... impossible to accurately describe. Get the chocolate covered version and, to me, (with an iced cold glass of milk) -- pure heaven.

Marie, on the other hand, thinks that Halvah tastes like an old shoe.

By the way, Larry... if you do know what I'm talking about (and I suspect you do), do you call it "Hal-UH-vah" like my family does? Where did that UH come from?

Lima beans...ah..that is not something I can deal with! I love black beans though!

As to a recipe..I thought maybe you had an "ol' family recipe" that you favored. I have a recipe for tofu chili that uses black beans...

I've had halvah and Marie is right....old, USED shoe...

and speaking of food from England, did your Pops ever introduce you to crumpets? My mom still loves those things, as did my grandmother....

...to me, they are in the same closet as those old shoes...

I bet that good....just don't tell me its tofu ahead of time.

We had a big green salad with cut up cheese and a can of black beans thrown in for dinner this evening. Didn't even heat the beans although that's good also. A little vinegar and oil dressing and it was great.

It looks like apple butter, but it sure don't taste like it!

Remember the old Men At Work song "Land Down Under" that had the line about vegimite in it?

Marmite is some yeast based concoction that just plain tastes like... well, you know.

http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil/marmite.htm

Here is a photo of a kid eating the stuff... yup, looks like what it tastes like.
