tamales

At this time of year, the best of the best in tamales is available around here because of the holidays.

So the other night, the wife stopped by Carrillos, and she got real lucky..it was late, but they were making a HUGE batch of tamales. She grabbed both chicken and beef and I gotta tell you..they were just WONDERFUL! Carrillos always makes good stuff (like hand made tortillas) but these were simply exceptional!

We go to the one on Sherman Way near Winnetka, but they are a chain with a few locations.

I love tamales!

I can't believe we have lived near Winnetka and Sherman Way for 20 years now and I've never had one from Carrillos. I'll check it out for sure. Thanks!

Or maybe go for lunch! The one near you actually has seating.
Anybody else up for lunch?

I'm not a big fan of tamales, but I love Mexican food. Is this the same place that is near that soul food place you like, BBlast?

If so, I have been there once.

Nope..that was Los Toros. And the "soul food" is actually southern food called Sisters. (GREAT place...but not really soul food..I didn't see any waffles and chicken on the menu..which is REALLY good BTW)

This is Carrillos. They have many locations but the one that is nearest to Larry is at Sherman Way and Corbin, right near the Smart & Final.

This is weird. We go to that Smart and Final a lot and I can't for the life of me remember seeing Carrillo's. I am sure that once I see it, I'll slap myself on the forehead and say, "OK, That place!"

I just had that moment yesterday. There's an H&R Salt fish and chips place only a mile or so away from us (in San Fernando). We have lived in our current place almos 7 years, and I had no idea.

Me too!

When I worked in Santa Monica, we used to go to this English pub place that served the best fish and chips I have ever had. I can't remember the name of the place. I do recall it was on Wilshire near the pier, I think.

Go to the front door of S&F. Then, turn to your right and walk 30 yards. Can't miss it.

So do I...but I have to admit that in the past few years, I eat the fish and leave the chips.

Ok, maybe I'll drive home tonight down Sherman Way and see if I can eye ball it. It sounds like it is in the white building just to the west of the S&F.

Maybe a Saturday or Sunday? I am working on Sun. 1/23 & 1/30.

If you guys can't all meet on a weekend that's ok. Maybe just Bill and I can meet there?

It is on Sherman Way, just west of Corbin, on the south-west corner. If it were me, I would take the Tampa off ramp from either the 118 or the 101. But just to be safe, look it up on the net.

Actually, I was hoping we could catch you on your lunch break! Hey, you gotta eat right?

Weekends are tougher for me. Unless it is raining, on sundays I am riding my bike and Saturdays I spend with the wife and fam around the house....but I suppose I could break from that...I would be willing to bet that the wife would join us too! She loves Carillos!

Well, I usually eat at my desk as we don't get lunch hours.

What about us all meeting there for an evening? Like after work on a Friday?

Won't get gory but read an article about a Kosher slaughtering plant and how they kill the beef. Yikes! I guess the humane society and the Kosher community are at odds.

In that case, you should probably forget about the whole thing, because it isn't likely to work out...

We were just discussing this in the office this morning. From my understanding, if the video was shot at the kosher meat packing plant, the methods employed are NOT kosher standards. One of the main principals of kosher slaughtering is that the animal is one of God's creatures and should not be caused any undue pain or suffering. Certainly, that is not the case in the PETA video.

I had no idea that to call something Kosher meant what it did. An interesting and enlightening story actually.
