My wife just could NOT leave this alone..she was worried about Danny because they were telling us that he had this "family emergency" and he had to leave town.

So yesterday, she calls them and then calls me and says, "I got blood out of turnip". Ok.. She called and spoke with whoever answered the phone and got her to admit that Danny is not there because he and the owner had a falling out. She said that the reason they were telling people that he had this "family emergency" was because that was what the owner had told them to say.

My wife explained this woman that we are regular customers and were genuinely concerned for Danny and his family and to use that lie to cover an unpleasent situation was worse than whatever the original problem really was. She also told them that we were no longer going to visit that sushi bar. (Good sushi is just to expensive to have to deal with that crap.)

So, having not gone for sushi in some time, we decded to try another place....

We went back over the weekend... just not the same place... 12:30pm in the afternoon on Sunday and the place was empty.

Food was good... it was interesting to see that they were separating the sauce on the Judy roll... they put the sauces in a bowl (rather on top) for dipping. I liked this, actually.

If you enjoy the food, atmosphere etc. I think it is silly to let this interfer with your enjoyment. A good sushi restaurant that you can trust and you don't get sick is a hard find.

Keep it about the food, is just my opinion. They don't pay, you do. Your business loss really won't "teach" them a lesson do you think?

Their personal business dealings is about them, and not for their customers. While I agree they could have said something less offensive and worrisome. They only owe you a clean restaurant and good food and service.

Just my opinion today.

Well, we see this episode as a reminder that it is fun to try different sushi bars and different sushi masters. Danny is great to be sure...but he ain't the only guy out there makin' some great sushi and great rolls!

BTW, did you see the paper yesterday about a sushi bar that got a Zagat award? Lemme look real quick...

GOT IT! In the number 3 place ranked among the "best food picks" by Southern Californian diners is KATSU-YA of Studio City.

(BTW, #4, was an upscale place in Woodland Hills call Brandywine)

I have not been to either, but a good showing in a Zagat usually says that something is very right.

I DO enjoy good food and good atmosphere, but I can't really sit there and enjoy any of that if I am uncomfortable with the place in general, don't you agree?

Also, when it comes to sushi, it isn't like sitting in a restaurant and the person that prepares your food is in the back somewhere. Sushi is up-close and personal and you develop, sometimes, a relationship with "your" sushi master. If you REALLY like that sushi master, then it starts to become a "habit". Take away a habit and you have created a blank spot, a hole..that wants to be filled.

I am not interested in teaching them anything. Cash these days is hard to come by so if I spend it on a sushi meal, I want it to be good and I want to be comfortable in my surroundings. I mean, come on..it isn't like there are no other sushi bars around! There must be 20 or more within 10 miles of my house, so why bother with a place that makes me uncomfortable?

I don't they "owe" me anything. They have a product/service that I choose to either take advantage of or not. It's my choice and I choose to USE my choice.

Yea, me too.

My wife's step father was german so we have enjoyed many a german meal in this house!

And man, can those guys eat or what? We once went to a german restaurant in Vegas and they brought out this plate of meat that was larger than a small child! And that was a meal for ONE! I think I made a dent in the mountain of meat..but not much!

The wife often goes to a german deli in Van Nuys for her "stuff". The weiners are execellent!

for gasoline.

Did you ever go to Hoppys Old Heidlberg in Sherman Oaks I think it was? Now that was wonderful food and tons of it. First you got a platter of pickled thingies...Dont ask me to describe it...and then real home cooked huge dumplings and the saurbraten was to die for.

I was very disappointed in the place we went Friday night. Just a cheap cut of roast slathered in a gravy with a slight sour taste. However the spaetzle was wonderful.

Yep, I went there once a long time ago with Scott Smith and his parents. Wonderful food. It was one of their favorite places.

Yes, I have been there many years ago. Nice place..a little far off our trail but I remember it as a nice place to get LOTS of food.

So, it was an Octoberfest? Was it thrown by a restaurant or was it like, a town thingy with lots of tents and beer and large breasted german women?

Was the cost worth the food and all or did you feel ripped off?

It was just a german restaurant that had a separate printed menu..your first clue to check your wallet...and an accordian player. No big breasted germans anywhere......LOL

They did have an Octoberfest in Thousand Oaks that didnt serve german food! I think Ventura needs a lesson in the definition of the word!

Octoberfest we all think of..in THIS day and age, as the german festival of beer and sausage..but October and particularly the first full moon of October, has been the traditional harvest festival time. (The crops are in, everybody is feeling great and winter is knockin at the door.)

Harvest Moon..has a certain..oh.."meaning" for me right now...

ROFL..that IS funny to me. I would eat a raw piece of fish, no problem..but *I* would have a hard time with a microwave chemical thingy that allowed me to only add water and make a cake! My goodness...what sort of science nightmares are IN that thing anyway??

Why would it have to be full of chemicals? Can't normal cake ingredients bake in a microwave? Water is usually an ingredient in cake recipes, isn't it?

No, water is NOT a "usual" ingredient in a cake. Water is used to rehydrate stuff that was put in by the makers of the cake mix to "simulate" the effect of eggs and such.

It's been a long time since I've baked, but I remember putting a small amount of water (quarter cup or so) in the batter for most cake and cookie recipes. I just googled for "cake recipe" and the last ingredient of the first one I opened is water (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mjw/recipes/cake/apple-pie-c
ake.html
).

But that's beside the point. My question was, why would you assume a microwave cake mix is all chemicals? Even if water wasn't part of the original recipe, the mix is just dehydrated batter.

Okay now wait just a minute here BB! I didnt look at the ingredients but how do you know it didnt have dehydrated ingredients like eggs and other good things? Back packers should know about nutritious food that you just add water to.

Because certain items cannot be dyhydrated so they need to be "produced"

I have made many cakes...and NONE that are made from "scratch" have had water as an ingredient. I am sure you can find recipes that DO include it..but I haven't run across such things as of yet. (We are talking from scratch here, not from a box.)

Back when I was backpacking, a friend and I made up these empty baggies that were labeled: "Freeze-dried water...Just add water"

We took them to Kelty Pack (Remember them?) and they put some on sale at the counter

Yes, so was I. I've never used a cake mix.

Good idea. Almost no effort required and it's about 99% profit.

Can't say that I've ever heard of a Kelty Pack store though. I assume it was run by the company that makes Kelty backpacks. I have one of their backpacks, though it's my oldest one and doesn't get used any more.

No, I hadn't. Thanks! I think that site could prove very useful, both for hikes and my little three-to-five-day trips.

That's them! They had a store in Northridge, in the same mall as Mushashi (Nordhoff and Tampa). Cool store, we used to hang out there a lot. Great staff too. I think they also had a store in Burbank? Not sure though. I just got rid of my old Kelty back pack when we cleaned out the garage. It always reminded me of the old Apollo Astronaut backpacks
