Darn good sushi!

Many years ago when we lived in Reseda, our sushi "place" decided to give it's best customers their OWN set of chopsticks. That place is now long gone, but last night we got another set from our "new" sushi bar. And like the first, he didn't need to do that...we would be coming back anyway!

Not only is the sushi the best and of course, he has some really great rolls...but what really caught us was that this guy is one of those VERY rare breed of chef that believes that the first thing you eat with is your eyes!

First off, the glass behind the case was clear, not frosted, so you could see this master at work. He took the time to make the food LOOK just great! And the taste? Well...you know we are limited in our income these days so we are REAL particular on the taste, and it was MARVELOUS. (You MUST try the Trojens roll. DAMM is that good!)

And just so you non-sushi folks don't feel left out, we DID ask about "other" dishes and he showed us a full menu of cooked items like teriyaki and tempuras.

OK, here is the place. The main guys name is..Billy Jack. Yup, that's what it says on this name badge. The place is Honshu. It is on Mason just south of Devenshire in the VONS center on the southeast corner.

I was salivating just reading your post. Rob and I will HAVE to give this new sushi place a shot. There's nothing like good sushi.

Thanks for sharing!

when I am in town I will take my hard working son, Rob there for lunch as it is my turn to PAY! Yummmmm can't wait thanx for the recommendation.

As a good mom I prefer to pay, but also so I can eat as much as I want, cause as you know it is expensive....

Do they have "green tea" ice cream, probably one of my favorites! Also I love coffee jello with a cream stuff on top. Served in a martini glass.. It is so good. Funny never thought of making it at home.

"rate" is a tough one. For the wife and I, we tend to put sushi restaurants into 4 catagories:
-Crap, don't go there
-interesting but not great (The all-you-can-eats would fall in here)
-good, decent, quality fish...a possibility
-great, must go, "our" place.

There is also an emotional response to a sushi bar. You are, more or less, one on one with the guy making your food. And for us, we LOOK for that kind of relationship. That is sometimes tough to find at a larger place or a place that is moving sushi chefs in and out. We also, once the quality is established, look for the "art" in the work.

In the case of Hyakumi, we loved the art the Danny brought to the process and after he left, we felt that the food was..I dunno...more in the eyes of the owner's vision and not the sushi chef. Not to say that what they make isn't VERY damm tasty! But for us, and how much sushi costs, we want..well...more!

So is Honshu "better" than Hyakumi? well..I think that they are very similar in quality but for us, we get that "more" from Honshu.

Not that you are going to try the rolls at EITHER.....

I hear ya. I agree, sushi is both a social and eating experience.

How about Hatano, still hanging in there in the now vacant mall on Parthenia between Tampa and Corbin? They've always seemed to have a nice social vibe there.

I may not eat the rolls, but Janice will. I like to watch

We have been there more than a couple of times. The sushi is OK, but I have had better. The real draw to Hatano is the tatami room. If you go with a small group, you can really have some great times because you are in this little intimate setting that induces some great conversations. Hard to find a tatami room around here.

Yes, that room is great! We've been in there a few times.

I hope Hatano's hold on. I admit we haven't been there in a while. I've been going there since my CSUN days.
