>How does this place rate against Hyakumi?"rate" is a tough one. For the wife and I, we tend to put sushi restaurants into 4 catagories:
-Crap, don't go there
-interesting but not great (The all-you-can-eats would fall in here)
-good, decent, quality fish...a possibility
-great, must go, "our" place.
There is also an emotional response to a sushi bar. You are, more or less, one on one with the guy making your food. And for us, we LOOK for that kind of relationship. That is sometimes tough to find at a larger place or a place that is moving sushi chefs in and out. We also, once the quality is established, look for the "art" in the work.
In the case of Hyakumi, we loved the art the Danny brought to the process and after he left, we felt that the food was..I dunno...more in the eyes of the owner's vision and not the sushi chef. Not to say that what they make isn't VERY damm tasty! But for us, and how much sushi costs, we want..well...more!
So is Honshu "better" than Hyakumi? well..I think that they are very similar in quality but for us, we get that "more" from Honshu.
Not that you are going to try the rolls at EITHER.....
