Kabuki Sushi

Janice and I returned on Saturday night to one of her favorite sushi hangouts, Kabuki Sushi in Woodland Hills. (Just west of the corner of DeSoto and Ventura-where the old Rickshaw restaurant was)

We both ordered off the sushi menu and were treated to wonderful, super fresh sushi that was absolutely delicious. Ok, I did my usual sushi wimpout and ordered a California roll but I also tried the "Sprider Roll", which is an incredible mixture of tastes and texture. It's basically a California roll, but includes softshell crab, along with ground crab meat and avacado. Absolutely wonderful. I also had sliced shrimp on rice, which was great as well. Janice had a spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll and ahi.

Wonderful, fresh quality and, get this, 50% off! The average sushi price was about $3.00-$4.00 or so, and this is the regular menu too. Total bill, including tax was $34.00.

I have to admit, the first time I went there I was turned off by the "trying too hard to be hip" decor and the noise level, which when crowded, exceeds what you would normally expect in a sushi establishment. My suggestion, beat the crowds on weekends and go early, around 6:00-7:00 should do it. We'll meet you guys there anytime you want!

Compared to Hyakumi and Mushashi, I'd have to say it's better quality than both Mushashi and Hyakumi and certainly less expensive than Mushashi.

Ya know Lar, half price sushi and all-you-can-eat sushi is a GREAT place to experiment and try new things!

I suggest that the next time you go that you TRY yellowtail sushi. Just try it..if it is cheap enough and you really don't like it, it won't cost you much to leave it on the plate. Then try the tuna.

THEN we have you hooked!!

Actually, after I thought about it, Janice also had the yelllowtail (one of her favs) and she said it was wonderful there.

I'm still leery of raw anything, but with enough sake or Sapporo, I might give it a go

Where does that come from, that fear of raw? I admit that you should not eat anything that is raw and has been sitting around for a few days to collect some nasties..but in MOST sushi bars, the fish you are eating was swimming around just a little bit ago...

Fears are rarely rational, when you really think it

Actually, it's not a fear on the same par as fear of heights, etc. It's something that wouldn't take much effort or bravery on my part to try.

There was an english show on a couple of years ago called "Two Fat Ladies" and one of those ladies was notorious for using meat that...well...WAS sorta green and hairy! They didn't show it on the show, but it was talked about.

I have seen the way that they say you can "age" beef. It turns it grey. But..not for me! I have had "aged" beef and I am not a fan. But you know, some people just LOVE stuff like that!

(Funny...I have no problem with the raw stuff..but I can't eat a brown bananna to save my life!)

On another Discovery show, Deadliest Catch, they showed a guy that recently was a new father, eating the beating heart of a cod. Hrmmmm

Our rule is........if its blue.......dont eat it! I bought a set of blue dishes once and my ...now long gone.....mother in law would not eat food off them.

That's silly! I don't own a lot of blue plates, but I LIKE the color blue and would have no problem eating off of it!

Just had an interesting thought..what if you have a serving plate for say, pasta..and it had a pic of pasta right IN the plate! THAT would be cool!

Me either. I hate it when they get all soft like that. Yuck! I try to buy bananas that are green so they'll last three or four days. Any longer than that, and they're heading into the trash.

Speaking of pasta...have any of you tried one of those new cooking devices where you just add boiling water? Its tall and round shaped. I just wondered how well they work.

From what I have heard and tried, they would work terrible. Pasta is a starch and as a starch, it needs LOTS of water or else you will be making..glue!

Those things may look interesting..but like I said, from what I have heard and seen, the science doesn't back up what it does. Might make an interesting flower vase....

I am not big on Tupperware, but they make a veggie steamer for the microwave that is just a GREAT product! We use it for steaming our fresh or frozen veggies..and it also works great for those frozen tamales that you get at Trader Joes!
