Water
3/9/04, 6:05am
graphic
The simplest of ingredients..water. It has been unusally warm here in southern California so this brings to mind...water.

How much water do YOU drink in a day?

Is it filtered? Bottled? Jugged? Tapped?

Is the water in your area "good" tasting, or does it taste like the local public pool?

If you buy your water, what do you pay? Are you concerned about the water availability in your area? Are you concerned about the water quality in your area?

Do you keep plants? How often do you water them? What kind are they? Do you have a lawn? How often do you water your lawn?

And what about your shower? Hard water stains or clean as a whistle? And what about that shower door/curtain?

Have you ever looked at your water bill to see what you use in say, a day??

Gallons..maybe 2-3 gal a day..I like water!

>Is it filtered? Bottled? Jugged? Tapped?
Filtered. Multipure. Love that things!

>Is the water in your area "good" tasting, or does it taste

The public pool would taste better than what comes out of my tap!

>If you buy your water, what do you pay? Are you concerned

It costs me about $40 a year for a new filter that feeds a faucet on the sink as well as the refridge and ice maker

>Do you keep plants? How often do you water them? What kind are

I have a lawn..I wants lots of water..I give it 2x a week for anywhere between 10 min and 20 min depending on time of year.

Our water is hard over here so we have to use this daily spray stuff and keeps it from "etching" the glass doors.

Yes, I have..and it is scary! I use more than 400 gallons a day! (When I think back to my younger days when we would go camping in my parents trailer and I had to cart 5 gallons..1 gallon at a time..in that tank....and how long that would take to do 400 times....)

Hrmmm..talking to yourself..good or bad thing?

Good questions Bill. First of all I have read of cases where people have actually overdosed on water so even with the simplest of ingredients you have to be careful I guess.

Our water must not be hard since we have no problem with water stains...or maybe its all those chemicals from that Rocketdyne installation leaching through our water supply that eats any residue away. LOL!

About 30 years ago we began making it a habit of installing a drinking water filter soon as we moved into a new house. Our ice is also on a filter. Cheaper than bottled which gawd knows where it comes from?

I also stock big 32 oz glasses so when we do have a "glass of water" its plenty. Personally I make 3 quarts of decaf tea and make sure thats gone by the end of the day.

How about the rest of you?

OMG! 2 or 3 GALLONS a day? Are you sure? LOL! Like a gallon milk thingy filled up 3 times? Must never leave the bathroom.

Yep we use the Mutipure system also. Its terrific. Where do you get your filters?

We water twice a week for about 10 minutes.

Far as taste I guess those chemicas do a good job of flavoring it cause its not bad.

It has been my drink of choice for all meals since the diet began. Probably about 64-76 oz. a day.

Arrowhead at home.

Don't drink it for fear it would taste like the pool.

>If you buy your water, what do you pay? Are you concerned

About $14/month for about two bottles a month (we bought a snazzy looking water dispenser from Costco).

>Do you keep plants? How often do you water them? What kind are

Plants are watered about once a week. Lawn is watered once a day (at night, actually) for about 10 mins during the warm season.

>And what about your shower? Hard water stains or clean as a
>whistle? And what about that shower door/curtain?

Hard and ugly.

We have two cleaners that we would swear by... "CLR" bathroom and kitchen cleaner comes in a yellow spray bottle. Gotta wear gloves 'cause it'll eat through your skin.

And, Clorox with bleach for the bathroom and kitchen... we have white tile countertops and when the nasties get into the crevices (say, drops of a nice Merlot), the Clorox gets it looking brand, spankin new.

There is a MultiPure office right here in Chatsworth. (Chatsworth and Sepulveda I think) I just walk right in and purchase one..I COULD do it by mail but then I would have to pay the postage.

I believe their main warehouse is somewhere in Nevada.

We use a product..I forget the name...that you spray on the walls and shower door after every shower. It takes awhile, but it does seem to get most of those stains out.

If your glass is "etched"..meaning that the hard water has eatin into it, then there is nothing you can do short of replacing the door.

Your water bill is $80 a QUARTER? Like in every 3 months? Mine averages $50 a month. So your gasoline is way cheaper and so is your water. Keep talkin...your neck of the woods is sounding inviting.

Thanks Bill. The installer wants you to buy it from him so they seem to keep where to buy them elsewhere a secret. Found them at the Valley Indoor swapmeet but that venue is gone now.

>How much water do YOU drink in a day?

It varies. Some days very little, some days a lot. I guess it depends on what I'm doing that day.

>Is it filtered? Bottled? Jugged? Tapped?

Filtered tap water. I bought one of those Pur filters that screws onto the faucet. I'm not all that happy with it, though. The water pressure I get through that thing is pretty poor. It takes too long to fill a glass or bottle.

>Is the water in your area "good" tasting, or does it taste

I've actually never had a complaint about the taste of the water here straight from the tap.

>Do you keep plants? How often do you water them? What kind are

One plant, a bonsai tree. It keep it in the bathroom window, which is inside my shower. When I take a shower, I run it under the spray for a few seconds. That seems to be all the watering it needs. No lawn here...

>And what about your shower? Hard water stains or clean as a

Shower door, no stains.

I rent. I don't get the bill.

What a great idea! Where can I get some of that stuff?

My brother once had an idea for a bottled water to market for alcoholics. It would contain caffeine for when they wake up in the morning all groggy and dehydrated. A couple years after he told me of this idea I actually saw bottles of caffeinated water at a 7-11. Haven't seen it again since then, though, so apparently it didn't go over very well.

I have a brother that is a chiropractor and he sells what we call "fire water" for something like $14 for a small bottle! Don't know what's in it...personally, I don't go for such things.

Speaking of...have you heard of the unique way the rich beat their various drug habits? Apparently they put them to sleep with an IV that runs for like 24 hours and rids their body of 99% of the habit forming drugs. Guess they wake up with a lot less problems of beating the disease that way.

Gee...why couldn't they put me to sleep for 24 hours and I'd wake up never being hungry for a Blizzard at Dairy Delight again in my life?

I said that "we" call it firewater..meaning, the wife and I..I have no idea what the brand name is.

My brother (the chiro) has an office in West L.A. and Valencia, but I THINK he is closing his West L.A. office. (We don't talk much)

He has! Just take a look at that photo gallery of his... you can't drive to all of those beautiful places.

EXERCISE is the key to healthy weight loss and better eating habits... period.

Found a lower-calorie, lower-fat cookie at Trader Joes that tastes better than the Cat Chocolate ones... 150 cals for 12 small cookies, and damned if these aren't delicious. Crunchy Chocolate Chip cookies... yum.

Well, it certainly doesn't hurt...

I hike anywhere from 2 to 4 miles every day in Griffith Park after work. Then, on my days off I head into the mountains for a little more elevation gain. I've gone through three $115 pairs of hiking boots in the past year. I've also gone through three pedometers. I've found they tend to die after about 1,000 miles or so...

After all those boots, you must have, by now, picked a good brand..so...what is the LonBurger hiking boot of choice?

I tend to get blisters pretty easily, so I've tried quite a few brands and styles to find the ones that work best for me. My favorites are REI Monarchs. They have a few designs they call Monarchs. The ones I like are the Goretex design (http://tinyurl.com/3gynv). I also recently used my yearly dividend to get a pair of low-top Salomon hiking shoes/boots (http://tinyurl.com/36fpp). They seem pretty nice and comfortable, but so far I haven't taken them on any lengthy hikes, just my daily jaunts around Griffith Park.

Do you use anything like moleskin to keep down the blisters? How do you treat them once you get one? Does that slow you down?

I carry moleskin and molefoam. I've also found that duct tape helps a lot, sometimes even moreso than moleskin, depending where the blister develops. If they get bad, they can slow me down a bit. Fortunately I don't get bad blisters very often, since I've discovered the boots that work for me.

Naw yer healthy as a horse I bet. You are literally addicted.
Doesn't your body make some kind of hormone when you exercise?
Its a feel good thing and some do more and more of it because of that. Keep it up Lonburger!

I was into running at one point in my life. Certainly couldn't keep up with you however. Anyway I found that if I took care of a blister soon as I felt the hot spot it really kept the discomfort to a minimum. Always had moleskin in my pocket.

I've heard of that "runner's high", but never experienced it myself. Hell, sometimes I have to force myself to keep going because I just feel like quitting so much. I do it because I love being in the mountains, not because I like the exercise.

Or do ya have to keep going because it's 20 miles to your car? That's super Lonburger....We'd all be healthier if we did more of that.

Been there...done that. We use to walk this fire road that seemed like 100 miles. We'd start out going uphill full speed and just collapse when we got half way through the loop. Sit and gasp for a long time and then finish it.
