If you have Food Network on your TV then you may have seen Alton Brown's show, Good Eats. Great little program that gives you some real science behind the food you eat and prepare. Great show and I see it all the time.

So the other day he is talking about shrimp. Now, I am a lover of shrimp but have not been satisfied as of late. I have tried those "shrimp rings" that they put on sale at the markets..complete with cocktail sauce..and they are tasteless to me. So, I was on a shrimp quest. THEN I saw the Good Eats show on shrimp.

He said that unless you live within 5 miles of a shrimp catching coast, then you had better get your shrimp raw and frozen! This is because, in most cases, the shrimp is frozen right after being caught and sometimes cleaned....so is it REALLY fresh!

OK, so off to the Ralph's for frozen shrimp. Got a bag of it..not cheap at all..but they are frozen and pre-cleaned.

Last night was BBQ night so I thawed the shrimp, dried em, and coated em with a light olive oil, keeping the shells on to protect them a bit from the heat of the BBQ. 2-3 minutes on each side and they were done..and they were the best shrimp I have had in a LONG time! They tasted like..shrimp! Oh, I made a little cocktail sauce with catsup and Sambal Oelick (hot stuff..GREAT hot stuff) but the shrimp were good with or without the sauce.

So, my tip of the day is..buy your shrimp raw and frozen and get out the BBQ (or use your broiler). You won't be sorry!!!

(I wonder if I should make a Whole Foods run and get some sushi tuna for dinner.....)

"Good Eats" is my favorite Food Channel show -- even better, to me, than "Iron Chef."

Thanks for the shrimp tip. I only got the "tail" end of that show the other day.

One of my favorite sushi dishes is the "sweet shrimp." They kill the little guys right in front of you... and you're eating VERY fresh shrimp, obviously.

Then, I like the shrimp heads tempura'd. With a nice ponzu sauce, the heads are absolutely delicious (like an interesting shaped, fried chip).

I find that the problem with "ready to eat" shrimp is that they are sometimes, VERY tasteless. Maybe because the large commercial houses that vend these things use steam to cook the shrimp. I dunno..but I am now hooked on fresh and raw and cook it myself!

I have certainly had sweet shrimp, but I can't say that I really like it that much. It is more of "entertainment" value for me..but taste wise...gimme a hamachi (yellowtail) any day! As to the shrimp..well..I have already said that I am now hooked on cooking it myself....

Funny how we tend to gravitate to various types of cooks on that network. I don't care for Rachael Ray too much. I like Tony on "Cook's Tour" where he tries diff things from all over the planet. Love Iron Chef. Don't care much for Sarah. I don't like Bobby Flay but he cooks pretty well. Emeril..well...I don't "dislike" him..but for some reason, I don't watch him much. Taylor Florence is ok with his Food 911. And Calling All Cooks is a bit of a hoot. And I DO love the "Festivals" program where they go around the country visiting various food festivals.

It took me awhile to warm up to Jamie Oliver (Naked Chef) I think because the production of the show itself. Too much NYPD camera movement for me. I DO like what he does with food though..he comes up with some neato ideas.
