This sounds idiotic (self-scanning your grocery purchases). It also sounds like it will ADD time to the shopping experience and not reduce it.

I wonder what the grocer's union thinks about THIS one. SCanners to the customers means fewer cashier jobs, no?

I went to Wal Mart with a co-worker of mine during lunch time, and she decided to scan her own items. Well, I don't exactly know how it works, but when she was all done scanning and putting all her merchandise in plastic bags (which were on a scanning device as well), the scanning machine kept repeating that she didn't scan 1 item. She couldn't figure out which item it was, so she had to take everything out of the bags and re-scanned all the items again.

My personal opinion, I'd rather have someone scan, ring and bag everything for me.

The Ralph's on Ventura Blvd. near Lankershim has had self-checkout lanes for quite a while now. Doesn't sound like the same thing the article in that link talks about, though. These are actual checkout lanes at the front of the store, not something you haul around the store with you. I haven't used these lanes, though, so I don't know how well the idea works.

That's exactly why I think it's a bad idea... I want my grocery shopping experience to move through efficiently... the best way to do that is to have a cashier ring everything up, one-at-a-time.

Yep...and how do they keep the scanners from walking and what if I put something in my bag and 'forget' to scan it? Do they go through and confirm everything? They would have to.

Home Depot has had that self scanning at check out for a while now. I've tried it twice and both times had to ask for help. I suppose if you have just 1 or 2 items that were properly marked it might work. Otherwise its a royal pain!

The real issue here is when do I drink the Starbucks I bought while shopping if I have to scan too? Geez...

Before you know it, all the checkers will be gone..as will all the stockers. You will wonder through a maze of boxes and cartons and at the front of the store will be a guy with a thick accent behind a bullet proof glass to take your money.

We don't have anything like that down here in the south, or atleast the Panama City area that I know of. It's a bad idea! It takes away jobs! There will also be a lot of people trying to shoplift more often, not that they'll get away with it.

I just don't see it... in fact, I think it will be the beginning of the rise of "we do the shopping for you, and deliver to you" services (services that have pretty much failed, so far).

I, personally, am not looking forward to the propsect of having to pick and choose my own groceries, and then scan them each individually. Even if this is scan as you go... because if you're buying a LOT of stuff... and you walk through the security check, and something beeps... you have to check every single, friggin thing.

I'd pay someone ELSE to do that for me... OR, I just wouldn't eat if I couldn't afford it.
