It also sounds like it will ADD time to the shopping experience and not reduce it. I wonder what the grocer's union thinks about THIS one. Well, I don't exactly know how it works, but when she was all done scanning and putting all her merchandise in plastic bags (which were on a scanning device as well), the scanning machine kept repeating that she didn't scan 1 item. She couldn't figure out which item it was, so she had to take everything out of the bags and re-scanned all the items again. The Ralph's on Ventura Blvd. near Lankershim has had self-checkout lanes for quite a while now. Doesn't sound like the same thing the article in that link talks about, though. These are actual checkout lanes at the front of the store, not something you haul around the store with you. Home Depot has had that self scanning at check out for a while now. I've tried it twice and both times had to ask for help. I suppose if you have just 1 or 2 items that were properly marked it might work. I, personally, am not looking forward to the propsect of having to pick and choose my own groceries, and then scan them each individually. Even if this is scan as you go... because if you're buying a LOT of stuff... and you walk through the security check, and something beeps... you have to check every single, friggin thing. I'd pay someone ELSE to do that for me...
