San Jacinto Peak
6/8/05, 8:48pm
Wow, am I ever sore. I just hiked to the summit of San Jacinto Peak (which, incidentally, is NOT Southern California's second tallest mountain, as is widely reported). This was my sixth time to the summit, but I've never done it like this before. There is still about five feet of snow up there with drifts topping ten feet. It ain't easy slogging your way through soft, wet, melting snow like that... I'll be sleeping good tonight!

Yes! Post those pics!

Did Ashley join you on this one?

Is San Jacinto Peak third on the list? I would guess the S. Cal order by elevation is : 1. Mt. Baldy, 2. San Gorgonio, 3. San Jacinto?

BTW: Huell Howser had a neat show on idyllwild last night. It looks like a neat place to visit. I'll have to put it on my "must see" list

No. The peak is within the San Jacinto Wilderness State Park and dogs aren't allowed in that area.

>Is San Jacinto Peak third on the list? I would guess the S.
>Cal order by elevation is : 1. Mt. Baldy, 2. San Gorgonio, 3.
>San Jacinto?

Baldy doesn't even make the top ten. It's the tallest mountain in L.A. County, but not Southern California's.

From the USGS maps, these are the 19 tallest peaks in Southern California, all of them over 10,000':

1. San Gorgonio Mountain (11,499')
2. Jepson Peak (11,205')
3. Bighorn Mountain (10,997')
4. Dragons Head (10,866')
5. Anderson Peak (10,840')
6. Charlton Peak (10,806')
7. San Jacinto Peak (10,804')
8. San Bernardino East (10,691')
9. Shield's Peak (10,680')
10. Jean Peak (10,670')
11. San Bernardino Peak (10,649')
12. Folly Peak (10,480')
13. Dobbs Peak (10,459')
14. Marion Mountain (10,320')
15. Grinnell Mountain (10,284')
16. Lake Peak (10,161')
17. Drury Peak (10,160')
18. Ten Thousand Foot Ridge (10,094')
19. Mount San Antonio (aka Mount Baldy -- 10,064')

San Jacinto Peak, Jean Peak, Folly Peak, Marion Mountain and Drury Peak are all in the San Jacinto Mountains. The rest (except for Baldy) are all in the San Gorgonio Wilderness area of the San Bernardino Mountains. Baldy, of course, is in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Also, the USGS maps are a little old and some of these mountains have newer "official" elevations. For instance, San Jacinto is now considered to be 10,834'. Bighorn Mountain is now considered to be 11,005'. San Gorgonio's latest measurement says it's 11,501'. The rest probably all have similar increases.

>BTW: Huell Howser had a neat show on idyllwild last night. It
>looks like a neat place to visit.

It's a very neat little town. It's kind of like Big Bear without the lake and just a little smaller.

Hi, Lon,

Wow, that is interesting. I had no idea Baldy was so far down the list.

I'd always assumed, incorrectly, that San Jacinto and Baldy ranked higher.

You're not the only one who thinks San Jacinto is higher on the list. I've seen it called the second tallest on some official web sites even, such as the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway's site and the site for the San Bernardino National Forest. I have no idea how those two could possibly get it wrong, but they have...

By the way, I've been the summit of every peak on that list, too. Several times for some of them.

Wow. Maybe you should change your alias to Jeremiah Johnson?

The PS Tram site may be where I saw it. I wrote some background research for my boss last year when we took the kids up on the tram.

A friend of mine wanted to hike San Jacinto, but didn't want all the mileage that the start in Idyllwild requires, so we were considering the tram. That was until we saw the price. $20+ for a short ride up the side of a mountain? Way too steep in my opinion. His, too...

It is pretty steep...its like a 5k' gain in 10 mins

Its a neat ride though and the views are incredible. There are some discount coupons available usually and I think they have a AAA discount.

I wonder how far the hike to San Jacinto summit is from Long Valley at the top of the tram?

I don't know the exact mileage, but it's a lot less than if you hiked up from Humber Park in Idyllwild or took the Marion Mountain trail. Those two routes are about 16 miles round trip, each. From Long Valley it's probably half that distance, or less.

The trail is on the north side of the mountain, so I would expect some snow, but I'm sure it's very minimal.

There is a show on Discovery Science channel called "Discoveries This Week", and last Saturday they had a guy that was taking a picture of the shuttle as it moved to it's launch pad. What was interesting was that the pic was shot on super large format film. Then, when the guy goes back to his lab, he converts that into a digital image. Apparently, by doing it this way, he creates a digital pic that, looks like the full shuttle on it's "cart", but you can zoom in and see the scratches on the bolt heads!!! HIGH detail!

Interesting stuff....

LOL! We were at this place a while back that had vials of sand from beaches all over the world. I can't recall where it was, but I recalled to Janice that it was a neat display.

Yep, you can definitely do that with large format photography negatives. The scanners for images that size are rediculously expensive, though!

You might enjoy reading a book by Rick Bass called "Coulter" or maybe "Colter". It is a true story about a man and his dog. Rick describes his early childhood in the book and one of his quirks was he collected dirt from all over the world. Your post reminded me of him.
