Providence Canyon State Park
7/6/05, 5:07pm (Last Edited: 7/6/05, 5:38pm)
Providence Canyon is also known as Georgia's little Grand Canyon. Unlike the Grand Canyon, Providence Canyon was created by poor agricultural practices.

Providence Canyon is none-the-less a very beautiful place hidden away in the middle Georgia pines. There is a backpacking loop in the park but for the most part it stays out of the canyons. There are several miles of trails through the canyons for hiking.

Below is a group of our Florida Trail hikers hiking up the trail which happens to be the muddy streams at the bottom of the canyons.

Very nice and interesting..can you tell us more about what "poor agricultural practices" led this feature? Seems like it would be a REALLY poor practice to be able to create such a place.

What is so strange about this place is it was caused by poor agriculture practices. If I remember right, the farmers/settlers in the 1800's plowed straight up and down the slopes. They did not terrace nor did they rotate crops. The water runoff cut trenches in the dirt. When the trenches reached the shallow second layer the erosion took off. Something about the type of mineral or dirt there made it very susceptible to erosive forces. The CCC in the 1930's tried to curtail the erosion with limited success (I believe by planting pines among other measures.)

Funny that you bring this up, I was suppose to go the canyon this Saturday on my bike. I guess it will have to wait for now.
