I had a great time. Ashley didn't make it on this trip. I let her get too out of shape this past winter and wasn't sure if she would be able to make the 15-mile hike. She probably could have, but I didn't want to take the chance, so she stayed with Madonna. I didn't feel too bad about it, because Ashley has already been on this hike before. She did it with me two years ago.

Now, to get to work on the pictures. I took about 450. I need to whittle that down to an acceptable number for an online gallery, then get them edited and on the web site...

Glad you had a great hike. I hate downloading and whittling down photos. That is a bear of a chore.

I am sure she preferred to stay in the AC too

Heh..digital cams...you would have to be rich to do that with the old 35mm. (Even proof sheets!) Now, you can take as much as the memory cards in your picket will hold!

So, what is your ratio now of shots taken vs. shots kept and "published" on your site?

For me, downloading is easy. Whittling the pictures down takes a little time, but the post-processing and editing is what takes forever and is a pain in the rear... I had four digital cameras with me. I didn't use one of them, and I'm done with the pictures of two others. Now to get through the last batch and get them online...

Knowing her, I doubt it.

Nature had the AC turned on where I was anyway. It was 60 degrees at the summit with a slight wind. It felt colder than that, though. Everyone was putting on jackets and gloves. The campground we stayed at was at 8,600' and was a bit warmer during the day, but it got pretty cool at night there, too.

For hiking trips, I usually only end up keeping about one fourth of the pictures. Then, I generally delete a few more while in the editing phase.

This trip was a little different, though. I actually restored several pictures during editing. Somehow I managed to put the camera into black & white mode one day, and I ended up throwing away a bunch of pictures I otherwise would have liked to keep. Some were just too good to toss though, and looked ok in black & white, so I kept a few of those. Fortunately, I always shoot in RAW mode (not JPG), and while post-processing those pictures I kept, I discovered that RAW retains the color data and I could restore that if I wanted. So, I went back and re-added almost a dozen pictures to the list of keepers...

Great pictures, Lon. Thanks for sharing them. Those time-lapse star ones are great. Another truly beautiful hike.

White has always been one of my favorites. I got a lot of pictures from the last time that are among my favorites, too. The only other two hikes I like more were Mount Whitney and Mount Tallac.

Thanks Murphy and Robert. I'm glad you liked the pictures.

I finally got Ashley back on the trails today and boy is she wiped out now! We did almost 10 miles on Mount Baden-Powell. It got pretty warm there toward the end of the hike, too. Now I have a bunch more pictures to get to work on... Fortunately, not as many as from the White trip.

The University lab buildings look so remote. Add ice and you'd have the South Pole.

What a neat place.

I'd love to see the Bristlecones at least once.

Maybe you could rig a camera to Ashley and see what it's like from her world....

What a great idea! Can you imagine a blade of grass and how TALL it looks from her perspective?

Nah... Add ice and you'd have White Mountain Peak in the winter. That place looks just like the South Pole for about six months every year. Even though it's in the desert, it's over 14,000' in elevation. They get a LOT of snow up there every year!

I really should do that. When I think that I've lived all of my 50 years in California and have still not seen the bristlecones or the gold country, it just ticks me off. I really need to do that before more time ticks by. With Matt going away to school, maybe Janice and I will have more free time to do stuff like that.

Right now I am sitting here at work, my uncle/boss is on a cruise and my immediate boss is taking his two weeks vacation too. The original plan was for the office to be closed these two weeks, in which case we were going to try to get away for a few days. BUT, my uncle/boss decided that since I was using my vacation to go back and forth to IU, that would be all I get. Oh well. And so it goes......

How fun! An entire trip seen through the eyes of Ashley. Can't wait to see the pics.

I might be able to hang it below her head if I shorten the strap enough. Of course, I'm sure she won't like it there, so it wouldn't last an entire hike. Maybe long enough to get a couple pictures, though....

Yea, just pick your place. Top of a mountain, a picture spot, even your camp.

I'd like to see that!
