This is a neat site I just came across. It is one one the USFS Volunteer Fire Lookouts (Mt. Vetter.ANF)....
http://www.cpwf.org/fire/lookout.html

That might make a neat day trip.

It does. I've been there several times, as a hike and on my mountain bike. It's one of the more accessible towers that are left. My favorite is the one on Tahquitz Peak in the San Jacinto Wilderness, but that one is a bit more difficult to get to since there's no road to it. You have to hike in to that one.

Cool beans I love fire lookouts! We have a bunch of manned (and womanned ) fire lookouts in my neck of the woods - the Needles and Buck Rock are two especially scenic ones! Here's a pic of me at the Needles where I led an interpretive walk last year...

The first time I hiked up there it was November... Here's that trip report! http://www.tarol.com/needles.html

Neat!

When I was a kid, I always thought that being a fire lookout would be a cool job.

We have two lookout jobs currently vacant - Jordan Peak and Mule Peak. I haven't been to Mule, yet, but here's some pics from Jordan...

I think so, yes.

You know that old joke about President Bush when he had the Israeli Prime Minister for a state dinner at the White House....They were having matzoh ball soup and the President asked the PM, "What kind of animal is a matzo? Do you eat all of it or just the balls? "

LOL......Um dont get me started on Bush either! Did you hear the one about the gold urinal in the bathroom? Guess he was touring the White House while Clinton was in office and raved to his wife about this gold urinal.

After the party Hillary remarked to Bill that she knew who peed in his saxaphone!
