Pricey Pacific flights turn off US visitors

I felt that this article goes hand in hand with the one before it....

Australia may be missing out on a potentially huge boost from US tourism because of inflated airline ticket prices and limited seats, new tourism industry research shows.

Industry analysts are blaming the problem on Federal Government restrictions on airlines allowed on the Australia-US Pacific run, which is dominated by Qantas.

Large sample research shows a third of all Americans over 14 are keen to visit Australia, but most are deterred by the cost.

Only one in three of those who would like to see Australia plan to come, and fewer than half of those are planning to make it the main country they visit on their next international trip, because of the expense.

One in five Americans believe it is too expensive to come to Australia.

The survey, by Roy Morgan International, sampled 1870 people in the US.

Company spokesman Gary Morgan attributes most resistance to the cost of air fares.

"We need to be competitive," he said. The Pacific route to America needs to be competitive with the Atlantic route. It's not."

There is a stand-off between Tourism Minister Joe Hockey and Qantas after Mr Hockey suggested this month there was "compelling case" for more airline activity on the US-Australia route.

Hi, Bill,

Interesting.

I'll have to ask my friend, Jim Bochneak about that. He is a sales manager at Air New Zealand. He is also a fellow CSUN RTVF alum of ours.
