Nearing the end of my Alaska trip I took a stroll at Earthquake Park in Anchorage close to the airport. The park was preserved after the 1964 earthquake that had a magnitude of 9.4. The ground in the park differs from the other terrain. As you approach the edge the ground drops away along a bluff with about a 15’ drop. The ground undulates in a ripple throughout the park with a labyrinth of parallel ridges and drops of about equal distance 10‘-15‘. The land here was flat prior to the quake. This area was preserved to illustrate the immense power of the quake. As I was exploring the trails in the park I sensed a presence I the woods and froze. Then I heard it moving near the river and got a glimpse of a cow moose. I whispered out to my brother near by and we relocated slightly to a nearby ridge and watched silently. The moose came closer followed by a calf and she moved into the clearing below us. I made noise with my camera and moved so that she would know we were there. She looked at me and continued to graze up to within twenty feet of me. The lighting was dim and many of my shots blurred but I kept taking shots and changing cards as needed and ended with some decent shots. We were startled as a group of kids came up on bicycles and I startled them as I jumped out and warned them of the moose as they were about to go down the embankment on their trail and would have met her at the bottom. The moose was startled too and they moved off. I got another shot a few minutes later as I was leaving and they meandered across the paved trail I was walking on.
