Alaska's North Slope Deadhorse Camp at Prudhoe Bay (Alaska TR)

Crossing the North Slope we entered a fog bank 20 miles from the coast of the Arctic Ocean. The temperature dropped to near freezing and the wind began to howl. It was hard to believe that moments before the temps had been in the 50’s and the sky was bright blue. This is what we found at the Northern Terminous of the Dalton Highway…Deadhorse Camp at Prudhoe Bay.

I believe these were oil wells enclosed in sheds to shield them from the weather.

This was a motel.

This is a gas station we stopped at. It was unmanned and the price per gallon was nowhere to be found. You just have to swipe your card and run the pump for the number of gallons you want. We took five gallons to make sure we could return to Coldfoot Camp.

And that is what we saw there. We were not allowed to go on to the Arctic Seashore as private vehicles are not allowed beyond the security gate and there is no public access outside of the commercial tour given during the summer months.

Hmmmm, doesn't look very inviting up there... I'm sure it's nicer once you get out of that dreary town!
