>Ok on the markers in the Jewish Cemetary. It would be

But I have a feeling the cemetery restoration committe just doesn't know who is there or they would have already put new markers up like they have done in Boothill. The records must have been lost or just not kept to begin with. Too bad.
>I still kick myself for missing an exhibition on Jews in the

Y'know, I had heard about that and missed it to. I wonder if they'll ever bring it back.

When I first started hunting down famous people's graves, I kept seeing pennies a lot, so I posted in one of the many cemetery related Yahoo groups I'm subscribed to, asking what they were there for. That's where I was told it was a Jewish tradition, and that they mean exactly what you said: to show the person has not been forgotten. I thought it was a wonderful idea, and I just happened to have a 5-gallon Sparklett's bottle half full of pennies. So... A new personal tradition was started.
A couple years ago when I found Todd Pittman's mother online and we started swapping email, she mentioned in one note about how her husband had gone to Todd's grave a few months earlier and had found two nickels on his marker. Not knowing what they were there for, he cleaned the marker then put them back where he found them, figuring someone put them there for a reason. I replied saying I knew what the reason was, and had a pretty good guess at the date her husband cleaned the grave... I put them there! (Some people rate more than a penny in my book.) I had stopped to visit his grave on my way back from Randsburg where I had gone for my annual birthday trip... It made her day.
