The ones there now are replacements that were put up when the cemetery was restored. I don't know if they plan to do that to the Jewish Cemetery also. My own tradition (which I believe is also a Jewish tradition) is to carry a bag of pennies with me and place one on every grave I visit. When I first started hunting down famous people's graves, I kept seeing pennies a lot, so I posted in one of the many cemetery related Yahoo groups I'm subscribed to, asking what they were there for. That's where I was told it was a Jewish tradition, and that they mean exactly what you said: to show the person has not been forgotten. I thought it was a wonderful idea, and I just happened to have a 5-gallon Sparklett's bottle half full of pennies. So... A new personal tradition was started. A couple years ago when I found Todd Pittman's mother online and we started swapping email, she mentioned in one note about how her husband had gone to Todd's grave a few months earlier and had found two nickels on his marker. Not knowing what they were there for, he cleaned the marker then put them back where he found them, figuring someone put them there for a reason. I replied saying I knew what the reason was, and had a pretty good guess at the date her husband cleaned the grave... I put them there! (Some people rate more than a penny in my book.) I had stopped to visit his grave on my way back from Randsburg where I had gone for my annual birthday trip... That may be how it was at first, but the practice has really caught on. Now, lots of non-Jews do it. Actually, I've seen people leave all kinds of things on graves. Flowers, rocks and coins are the most popular, but I've also seen bullets (Wyatt Earp), a bottle of Jack Daniels (Sinatra), toys, stuffed animals and pinwheels (usually kids in ghost town cemeteries), etc. Some look like people just emptied their pockets on the grave, like Jerome Howard (Curly of the Stooges). He had rocks and coins (including a huge NYUK NYUK NYUK that someone spelled out in pennies) plus things like cigarette lighters, plastic tokens, beads and God knows what else. Women like leaving lipstick prints on markers a lot, too. They have to take the face plate off of Marilyn Monroe's crypt every few months to clean it because it gets so gunked up with lipstick. Bugsy Siegel and Truman Capote usually have a few also. Then there's the lavish decorations I see around Christmas and Easter. The Chinese have picnics on their relatives' graves and leave behind a whole plate of food. They also have a tradition of bringing things made out of paper in the shapes of things the dead person liked, then burning them on the grave. It's a child and they don't know it's name. Hmmm... Then a little later on the page it says this: There is NO proof that this "cemetery" was an actual Jewish cemetery. The source cannot locate any documents consecrating the ground as a Jewish cemetery. There are NO known Jewish burials in the area that inhabitants have indicated was a Jewish Cemetery. No records have been discovered that indicates who might be buried there. The town is a historic one and Jews were known to have lived there and died there. Burials, however, usually were conducted at cemeteries out of state or in larger communities. So was that child buried there Jewish or not? When we rode through an Indian buriel ground they said not to disturb items in the trees. That they were sacred prayer rituals. On one long isolated stretch of highway these branches were showing up every 3 miles or so for miles and miles...and the ribbons were red, white & blue. I think my kneecaps rubbed the skin off my ears before I finally managed to squirm out of that thing. I think I had to come out head first back to the pavement dragging my feets behind. I had lots of trouble with a patrol car too especially with a cage behind the seat that kept me from adjusting the seat. Couple that dicomfort with a bullet proof vest strapped tight and a weapons belt compressed tight to hold the weight of the gear up over a 12-16 hour shift and you can understand a little how miserable I could get. I really had to tighten that weapons belt tight as I had no butt to hold it up and my belly would add to the downforce on it which would never be a good thing. If I got in a foot chase with it too loose I could loose it. As a young man Mr B was an LA Count Sheriff and on one of his first pursuits the training officer was flying down city streets at warp 90 and suddenly saw the suspect...slammed on his brakes and jumped out of the car with Mr B right behind him.....or that was the plan. Problem was Mr B forgot to unbuckle his seatbelt and ended up hanging out the car door all tangled up in it. For the new car, I got the LoJack Early Warning system. It's a little more expensive than the normal LoJack. They gave me a little fob to hang on my keychain. I was driving a 7-year old Cavalier with 150,000 miles on it that I originally bought for $14,000. Now, I have a new Cavalier that cost $20,000. My insurance only went up $150/year. I think I've mentioned before that on weekends when Danny and I work together, we usually watch several movies if things are slow and quiet enough here. We've been on a kick lately, going through all the oldies. This morning we watched Hitchcock's "Notorious". Yesterday it was the 1936 version of "My Man Godfrey" with Carole Lombard. I didn't know Bogie made a movie with Bette Davis.
