Kenia Fjords National Park Part 1 (Alaska TR)
11/2/05, 7:55pm (Last Edited: 11/2/05, 8:42pm)

These are some pics from Kenia Fjords National Park and Holgate Glacier. This area was spectacular and watching the glacier calve and sensing the sensations that are associated with it were incredible experiences. I will have more later as time allows.

Thanks Larry. The glacier had a river flowing from the center and had a huge ice cave. Fairly often the air was pierced with a sharp cannon shot like crack as a chunk of ice would break off and fall into the water. This was hard to catch as it happened so rapidly. I don't remember the name of the bay around the glacier but the Athabascan translation was literally "The scary place" as they were terrified by the noises and waves that eminated from this glacially and geologically active area.

The ice cave in the center of the glacier reminded me of the Abdominal(I know it is misspelled) Snowman's cave in the animated classic "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer". I was half expecting him to peek out at us.

From time to time the air would be pierced with cannon like crack and you could hear a rumble but nothing would be falling. On these occaisions the ice was falling in an inside cavity in the glacier.

I know what amazed Janice and Matt the most on their cruise was the blue color of the glaciers.

I touched a real glacier earlier this year. It was in Las Vegas, of all places...

It was at the Tropicana. Back in March when I was there (or was that May?), they had a very interesting "Artifacts of the Titanic" exhibit. I spent a good two or three hours there. Included in the exhibit was a large piece of the titanic's hull and a huge chunk of an iceberg that they had shipped in for the exhibit.

LOL! On this Kenia Fjords trip a piece of ice was brought aboard and if you were bold you could get drinks with glacial ice in them. Of course I had several, non-alcoholic of course.

That's ok, I made the mistake today of posting a question about the FDNY on a site, but I made the mistake of writing NYFD, and I got blasted for it by some fire fighter in Rhode Island. Sheesh!

That's it.

I collect the scale model fire engines that Code-3 sells. http://www.code3.net/fire/ These really have some amazing detail. Anyway, they just released a FDNY ladder truck that has steer horns on the front top of the cab. So, because there are a lot of FDNY firefighters on the Discussion Board on Code-3's site, I asked if someone could fill me in as to why the horns. I had heard it was some long time tradition at that particular fire station. I didn't get an answer back yet, just a snide response from one guy saying, "Its FDNY" As I said I accidently wrote NYFD in my question post.

Just swing by Vegas on your way back home.

I doubt it will come here. The exhibit is put together by the Tropicana resort. They don't own anything out here (that I'm aware of), so why would they bring it this way?

Hrmm..just curious, but seeing as how all these tribes are now putting up casinos, ARE there casinos in Indiana?

Probably. I don't recall seeing any on our drive last spring from Michigan to Indiana, but I bet there are some. There are, of course the riverboat casinos, which I think there is one operating from St. Louis? Not that close to IN, though.

I do know there is the Mohegan Sun Casino in CT. They own a WNBA Team.

Oh sure...Hide the women and children!

The last two times in Vegas, I quickly dropped $60.00 at the blackjack tables, got ticked off and just played the poker machines the rest of the weekend. Maybe they should bring back faro?

Y'know, I've never played a table game. I've been pretty tempted to jump into a craps game, but I just haven't done it yet. I stick to the video poker machines, too. Those are my favorite, and I've had decent luck with them so far, too. I almost always come home with a few bucks more than I left with.

I wonder why they don't have faro tables in Nevada...

Yep, not near Matt, but basically along the route we are taking from IU to my brother in law's in W KY. We drive right through Evansville, which got hit hard last night.

I wonder why Vegas does not have pachinko machines either. They are just SO big in Japan and in Asia!

And there is something wonderful about playing against little dropping balls that are driven by gravity and not some computer chip.
