Indiana & Kentucky Pics

Here's some pics from our Thanksgiving trip:

Assembly Hall: The world-famous basketball arena at IU

My brother & Sister In Law's house in Madisonville, KY
Actually, this was at Homestead Village at Land Between The Lakes.

This is really their house. Over 3800 sq. ft on five acres. Indoor pool, three floors...It actually appraised recently for less, yes less than our 1700 sq foot house here in CA

How do they heat that house? (Gas? Oil? Electric? Nuclear?)

Wow! Your brother and sister-in-law's house is gorgeous! And an indoor pool, too?!?

I love the house in the picture above that one too, but that's probably just my native heritage showing through. I wanna move in!

Probably not Its an historically accurate 1850's era working farm. No heat, except the fireplace in the main room and holes through the slats in the walls. One of the docents (in character) told us they use at least 8 blankets when it gets cold. That was really a neat place to visit. I'd like to spend more time there next time. I talked to a guy splitting logs for fire wood. He showed me how they use this huge mallet and drive wood wedges into the log. One swing of that mallet would be enough for me. Of course, it was either that or freeze with no firewood.

My brother in law's place is amazing. The indoor pool is in a heated and a/c'd room, attached to the family room. It also has a hot tub. Janice and Matt went swimming Thanksgiving night. It was in the low 20's outside, but toasty around the pool

Our friends new house in Wisconsin is "radient heat." Its hot water run through radiators along the base of all the rooms. They say its very nice caus the temp never changes like it does with a thermostat. Its a constant 54 or whatever all the time. LOL
Its heated with natural gas.

Uh thats a no thanks!

Yep, that and two kids in college. The other two will be in college within a couple years.

By the way, he treated one of the people injured in the tornado. The guy was in his car, which got flipped several times in the debris field and then landed 100 feet up in a tree. The guy's wallet was found 10 miles away!

THAT would be SO odd! I have played tennis, indoors, when it was snowing outside when I was in Oregon..but swimming? That IS odd!

I cant imagine the terror while that was going on. I'll take an earthquake any day........I think.

Sounds really nice!

I showed your message with the pictures to a guy I work with and he was puzzled when he saw the mention of "three floors." I had to explain to him that all houses in the midwest have basements. I'm not sure if that made it any clearer to him or not. He's born and raised right here in the L.A. area. I'll bet the only basement he's ever seen is at the hospital where we work.

Speaking of which, when we lived in Omaha, we knew at least one family who owned a house with TWO basements.

The public pool my brother and I used to go to when we lived in Omaha was indoors. I never felt that was odd. Of course, that was an Olympic sized pool in a gymnasium kinda building. Maybe I would have felt different if it was in a significantly smaller building.

Nope, no basement. The third floor is a large loft. I posted a picture of the rear of the house in this message area.

Ah, got it! I'll have to show that picture to my coworker in the morning when he gets here.

I'm real surprised there's no basement, though. When I lived in the Mid-West, a house without a basement was unheard of! That's where you're supposed to go when a tornado is on it's way... Most basements were "finished" too, meaning they had been converted to living spaces instead of just a large bare cinderblock walled room. My dad did ours so it was pretty much like a separate apartment, missing only a kitchen. That was where I "lived". My bedroom was down there and I had a den and living room of my own, too. The laundry room and my dad's work shop were also down there, so I didn't have it completely to myself.

That is actually a few cool idea! Have a modern house with modern insulation and heating and such..but make the front of the house LOOK like something from the 1800's.

The house that we rented in Oregon had a HUGE basement. You could divide up that place and rent it to 3 or 4 people!

I was surprised too. Their old place on Long Island had a basement.

By the way, there were places selling these bunker-like things called storm shelters around there. Looked like old ammunition boxes.

That would be neat to have. I love rustic places like that.

Just outside Indianapolis, on the way to Bloomington, there is a really great modern log house that can be seen from Hwy 37. I'd love to own it. Its a huge place. I'll have to try to take a picture of it next time.

Even older houses here had basements. We lived in a house built in 1927 that had a basement with a secret door that looked like paneling. You opened it and went down very steep stairs to a 10x10 area and a huge gravity heater.

Exactly. They used the second (lower) basement as a game room. That was one very nice house! The Kings were the first millionaires I knew, personally.

Marie and I saw this HGTV special a few months back about decorating your basement. This one guy designed a small, old country style town in his basement, complete with a cobblestone street and 7 or so shops (including a barber shop and a shoe repair). It was absolutely amazing, and I wanted to have a basement of my own.

Our basement is currently a single slab of concrete about six or so inches thick, I imagine.

LOL!!! I hear ya. I don't think I would consider KY, but I would consider Bloomington, IN, where Matt is. Its just such a great little town. Its also a good deal larger than Madisonville, KY, which has a pop. of around 16k. Bloomington is about 70k.

Yikes......Wouldnt that be kinda dark and spooky? Guess safety wise its better than adding a story.

Not at all. The basements were always finished, which means it looked like any other part of the house. The second basement in our friend's house didn't have windows, of course, but all the other ones did. They're just smaller and higher up the wall.
