St Andrew's State Park (TR)
12/26/05, 11:51am (Last Edited: 12/26/05, 7:49pm)
I visited the local state park, St. Andrews State Park, this morning. I finally had clear weather on a day off and I wanted to try out the new camera and do a little lite hiking. There is a nature trail hidden on the back side of the park that gets relatively lite traffic this time of year. I was rewarded with some wonderful wildlife even though the trail is fairly short. Pictures and comments follow.

I am not sure what kind of bird this is. It rustles around in the underbrush and tends to stay close to the ground. Perhaps some of the birders out there can help with the ID.

Soft-Footing it up the tail into the wind it wasnt long before I slipped up on a group of four deer. The deer didnt seemed to be too concerned about my presence.

Thanks to TDale for the ID on the first bird. It is an Eastern Rufous-Sided Towhee for those that are interested in such things.

That's what I thought too. I just flipped through my copy of the "Peterson Field Guide to Western Birds" and this picture doesn't look anything like the towhee's listed in that book (no red breasts on any towhee there), but it's a dead ringer for the American Robin. Of course, this book is for western birds, but Robert is on the east coast. Curious...

Hey, those deer are necking! lol

Great photos!

That definitely doesn't look like a robin to me - right coloration but the shape of the bird, especially it's head, is all wrong...

Other than the coloring, right. I didn't think it was a robin due to the shape of its head.

I tend to agree with Carol, the head shape is wrong for a robin.

I saw my first ever cardinal last summer at IU. That was neat.

I have both the east and west coast versions of Peterson's...I didn't think it was a Robin when I posted the pic but the closest coloration I could find was that of the Robin. I have another pic that I was able to enlarge and shows a white strip down the center of the breast of this bird. I am convinced now that it is a color phase of the Towhee
