And, I mean EARLY. I'm supposed to be there by 9am. I'll be meeting up with about 30 people from the Canon forum for the weekend. Sunday afternoon when the shindig breaks up I'll be heading back to my favorite haunt: Jackson. I called Tracie this morning and reserved the Pumpkin Room for three nights. On my way home, if the roads are open, I'll swing by Yosemite. I need to buy a new National Parks pass, and I haven't been there in a while anyway. I haven't even started packing yet! Cambria is on the central coast of California, between San Luis Obispo and Hearst's Castle. As a camera guy, you would LOVE it...lots of sea lions on the coast and some beautifil country to see. Cambria itself sits right on the coast and in many areas, you can rent a house that has an ocean view. Cambria is a tourist/artsy kinda town. Lots of great little shops and restaurants. The area around Cambraia is the new wine area for the state and personally, I think that the wines that come from there are far better than anything Napa has produced..but that is my opinion. The wife and I just LOVE the central coast. There is a lot to do there...but it is also a great place just to find a quiet spot and read. Cambria is also a good starting point for other things in the area..Hearst's Castle, San Luis Obispo, Moro Bay, Pismo Beach..all great places to see. There is also a nature refuge..darn if I didn't forget the name, in Moro Bay. Probably more. Every month of the year, every kind of weather you could imagine. I've seen it. Well... I thought so, anyway. It doesn't snow here. Really, it just doesn't. Well, maybe once every couple dozen years there will be a light dusting in the higher elevation towns, but it'll be gone by noon. There was snow in Coarsegold! That's, what... 2,500'? And I was still on Highway 41! I made it to Oakhurst, turned left onto Highway 49, and after about five miles I thought I was arriving at a ski resort in Colorado. Two feet or more lined both sides of the highway. Then it started actually snowing... Hard! For maybe 30 or 40 miles the white stuff was attacking my windshield, but Rain-X fought back valiantly. Several hours later I finally made it to Jackson, checked in, then ran Ashley out back for a potty break. THERE WAS SNOW THERE TOO! It doesn't snow here! Wow... Now I'm wondering if I'll even be able to make it to Tahoe and Yosemite... I did notice the roads to Yosemite are open, but chains are required. I have chains, but I really, really, really hate dealing with those. I'll put them on if I absolutely have to, but if I know in advance they're required, I'll avoid the area. One other item of note from today's long drive... I took Highway 41 all the way from Morro Bay to Oakhurst. About halfway to Fresno it merges for a while with Highway 46. When I got to the intersection where they merge I damn near shouted "Holy crap! This is where James Dean died! I recognize this intersection!!!" As I pulled into the left turn lane to merge into the 41/46 stretch, I saw a sign that read "James Dean Memorial Intersection". I'd never been there before, but a few months ago I found a web site that had a bunch o' pictures from then and now. No showers and you are RIGHT on the beach...but I love that little place! My car had about a quarter inch of ice all over it in the morning and I had to borrow an ice scraper to clear the windows. Four hours later the sun was out, the sky was clear and it was well on it's way to temps in the 80's. The snow at the lower elevations was gone by noon. The roads are all clear now. The 88 (Carson Pass) was the only one that had a chain restriction this morning, and that's my favorite way to get to Tahoe, so I didn't go there today. I'm sure the restriction has been lifted by now, so I'll be going tomorrow. When I spent the winter in Oregon, we stayed on largesh piece of property that allowed me to go to the car and start it..turn on the defrost..then go back into the house for a cup of coffee. When I came back out, the ice was off the windshield and car was nice an cozy. I DID have an ice scrapper for those times when I had to leave quicker than that...but I found that the start-the-car-and-wait method was a lot less work..and, I got the coffee too! Once, after a really cold night, I did my method and then went into work. One of my employees was kidding with me, saying things like, "Being from California you probably used a credit card to see out your windsheild huh??" Heh..he as amazed at my solution. I fired up the car, cranked the heat and turned the dial to defrost then punched the button for the rear window defroster. A few minutes later I started scraping ice on the driver's side. The skeptic in me says that's probably an urban myth, but actually I wouldn't be surprised if that really did happen somewhere, sometime. I was surprised at how much snow there was there. Or, should I say, lack of snow... I really expected a lot more, especially after this past weekend's storms! There was more there after that rather unusual storm in October 2004! The Highway 88 (Carson Pass) part of the drive was beautiful, as always. That's definitely the way to go if you're headed to the south end of the lake. The scenery along the way is so much better than on Highway 50 that it's worth the extra 30+ miles! It's also not as popular as the 50, so there is less traffic. From South Lake Tahoe, I drove clockwise all of the 75(?) miles around the lake; up Highway 89, stopping in Tahoma for an early lunch at the Old Tahoe Cafe, then continuing on to Tahoe City where I picked up Highway 28. Once on the northern shore, the snow on the ground was even more sparse (the mountains above, where the ski resorts are, had plenty though). I followed the 28 over to the Nevada side, stopping several times to let Ashley run and play in what little snow there was, then picked up Highway 50, back through South Lake Tahoe (America is playing at Harrah's this weekend! Damn... Why do I have to go home?), then back down the 50 to Placerville, and the 49 to Jackson. Fun day. The best part of the day was when I stopped at the southern vista point at Emerald Bay, Ashley's first sojourn out of the car at the lake. She hopped out, looked around at all the snow (this is where it was at it's best, too), her eyes got big and the tail started wagging, and she just started darting all over trying to check everything out all at once. Made me think of a little puppy seeing snow for the first time. She's seen, played and hiked in plenty of snow before, but it had been a while. Obviously, she'd missed it...
