Day trip

Ok, we didn't go backpacking at some wonderful area..and I have no pictures..but I thought I would relate about a day trip that the wife and I took.

Lately, we have been trying to do this because it gets me away from THIS damm chair and monitor.

So, she says, "Let's go to Ojai". Ok..let's go!

(For those that don't know, Ojai is north west of where I am in El Lay, and a nice "mountain" type ride. In fact..darnit..it is one of those rides that would have been GREAT on a motorcycle. )

On the way there along the 126, we saw the sign for Lake Piru. Having never been there..we turned off. (We sometimes do this to explore camping areas and such.)

A bit of a drive, but at the end, not a bad place. Of course, it really does look like one of those places that would be 100% full during the water skiing season, but still..a nice place..nice lake..and the inlets have very restricted speeds so the fisherman and those that rent those "cocktail" boats can kick back and still enjoy the lake. They have swimming areas and floating outhouses. (Hey, that's what the brochure said!) Anyway, for a quicky getaway for a couple of nights, it would not be that bad.

So, back to our trip to Ojai. Even with all the construction going on along the route, it is still a nice drive along a shady and cool road before you drop in the the Ojai Valley.

Unfortunatly, the brew pub that I like, was no more. (Can you say, "Computer Palace"?) So we did the local mexican place. Not bad..but not great either.

And of course, on the way back, we HAD to stop at one of the fruit stands!!

(For those of you guys that are local, the strawberries this year are outragiously great!!! It is almost worth the drive just to grab some, either off of the 126, the 118 or the 101. )

Never?!? I'm surprised. It isn't very far from you... I've been there hundreds of times. Of course, Glen Jomes and I used to live in Moorpark, just over the hill to the southwest. I'd been going to Piru (the town and the lake) much much earlier than that, though. The lake is also where my dad's and his brother George's ashes were scattered after their deaths. Yeah... Lake Piru is kinda special for me.

How was the water level? Last time I was there, probably three years ago, our drought had the lake dangerously low. I'll bet our wet winter a year ago helped a lot, but it's been pretty dry since then...

Very clean floating outhouses, too! The first floating outhouse I ever saw was on Shasta Lake, though. That would have been in the summer of 1981. I had been to Lake Piru earlier, but it was much later before I saw it from a boat...

That Sounded so great Bill. I bet it was an awesome time. I am tempted to get in the jeep...take the windows and back window out and drive out just for some strawberries.

Did you do this on Sunday? Ojai is one of our favorite rides. We rode up to Jalama Beach...above Goleta.....for burgers and came home via Santa Paula...and the 126. BTW if you are looking for good Mexican food try the place in Santa Paula...Cant remember the name but its a good sized restaurant right on the corner as you get off the freeway.

Wow..you have quite a history with that place! For me, this was the first time visiting..I guess that sometimes you just don't even think about the closest places.

The level was quite high! You could see that it was JUST below normal water height. You could see..oh..maybe a foot of the "brown".
