I'm heading to San Francisco early Friday morning on a secret mission, but I think I can spill the beans here since Dante doesn't know about this site and won't see this message. One of the guys on the Canon forum owns a restaurant in San Anselmo, a small suburb of San Francisco. His restaurant was flooded back in December when it rained so hard the business district in town was under about two feet of water. He spent a couple months rebuilding and finally reopened a month or so ago. So, several of us are going there on Saturday and just showing up unannounced to surprise him. On the way up, following the 101, I'm planning to stop off at the Winchester Mystery House and Wyatt Earp's grave. Sunday will be Alcatraz. When I was in San Francisco with Madonna two years ago, we wanted to go there, but didn't realize how far in advance the tickets sell out. This time I'm better prepared. I bought my ticket online over a month ago. I was planning to take Highway 1 home, but it looks like that might not work. A rockslide yesterday caused considerable damage to the road just south of San Francisco and now it's closed indefinitely while they rebuild it. I don't know how long that will take, so I'll just have to keep checking Caltrans' web site or check my maps and figure a way around the closed section. Sunday is the only day I really care about here. If it's raining on Friday I'll skip the Winchester Mystery House (I've been there dozens of times already, anyway), but I can still stop in Colma to say hi to Wyatt. The plans for Saturday at Bubba's Place are all indoors, so the weather that day doesn't really matter. I just want very little or (preferably) no rain at all on Sunday when I'm on Alcatraz Island. That's all I ask for... Monday's plans are still up in the air while I figure out how to get from San Francisco to Monterey. I also have a few other outdoor photo ops in and around San Francisco that I'd like to take care of, but they aren't date specific. I mean..it's ok..but for pictures, *I* would think that along the 1 itself would be THE place. (Yea, you COULD go to Carmel..but that place is "overworked" a bit.) I've been there, and I've seen it... I have one or two pictures of the ocean. That's enough for me. I like mountains, redwood trees, rivers and streams, hiking trails, ethings like that. That's what Big Sur has in abundance. It's a helluva lot better than the coast in my own opinion. I looked up the area where the rock slides are (there are two, I found out). They're both south of Big Sur, so I'll be able to get there, no problem. Then, I'll just have to head back up to Monterey so I can cut across to the 101 and head home. There was a Just Tires next to where I had stopped, so I went there to have it looked at. The guy took one look and said, "Oh, that's a bad place! You need a new tire." I asked if there was a Sears nearby, because I have the road hazzard warranty on the tires. He said there was one a couple miles away, and told me how to get there. At Sears, when I explained that I had bought the tires at the Northridge store, the man helping me said he wouldn't have a record of that in his computer, and he didn't have the phone number for the Northridge shop to verify my warranty. He suggested I buy a new tire, then have them reimburse me when I get home. As he was writing up the work order, I pulled out my Sidekick cell phone, went to Google, and typed in "northridge sears automotive" and the first entry listed had the phone number right there in Google's description/summary. So, after a quick call, I'm getting a brand new tire for $13. I love my Sidekick! Now as soon as they're done replacing my tire, I'll continue on to the Winchester Mystery House. It's funny. After I bought these tires I was kicking myself for buying the road hazzard on them. I never do that because it's usually a waste of money. He didn't seem to be too happy to be working there... I really love these tires I got from them, though. It's the first time I ever bought Michelins, and I'm sold on 'em. I have the All Weather ones, and I've never seen such great tire wear. They're almost a year old (well, three of 'em) with 17,000 miles on them, and the guys at Just Tires and Sears both thought they were brand new. LOL... Hey, my cell phone can receive email, including attachments! If I can just figure out how to use that file to cut a bar or two, this will be perfect! Now the forecast is calling for rain every day. So far, it looks like the heaviest rain tomorrow will be late at night with only scattered showers through the day. So, hopefully Alcatraz will still work for me. I'll just have to bring a trash bag or something to protect the camera in case I'm outside when it's raining. And I'll have my umbrella along as well. It clear right now, and today is supposed to be a relatively rain-free day with a scattered shower here and there. Yep, Sears is going downhill, I think, which is too bad. My family has always sworn by Craftsman tools and Kenmore appliances. We still have the Kenmore washer and dryer that we bought when we got married...22 years ago! Michelins are great tires. If you are a member of Costco, you might want to check on the prices there. They seem to have better deals than Sears. I have only had 4 wheel drive vehicles and typically only run Goodyear Wrangler tires. In my experience the Goodyear tires sold through Sears and other outlets are different than the ones bought through a Goodyear retailer and do not match up exactly with the brand store tires. I only get my tires at Goodyear. I still like Craftsman tools. Most of my tools are Craftsman but I am not a purist. Message #2976 of 4034  *NEW* To From Subject Date All Thomas Canty I escaped from Alcatraz! 4/9/06, 9:32pm Who says you can't escape from there? I made it out just fine! What surprised me most was how small it was! The Motel 6 in Beatty, NV is bigger than the cell house! Also, it was nowhere near as bleak and dreary as I expected. Sure, the cells were very small, but otherwise it just wasn't as bad as I'd been expecting. Not that I'm saying I'd like to live there, of course... I also recognized a couple places on the island from movies I've seen. Particularly the exercise yard! After I made my escape and swam back to San Francisco, I wandered around Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 for a while (without camera though -- I didn't trust the clouds). It's funny... When I was here two years ago I was very much less than impressed with the city and vowed I would never return again. Nothing personal. San Francisco just didn't appeal to me. But there was always that regret that I wasn't able to see Alcatraz hanging in the back of my mind. So, when the idea for the surprise attack on Bubba's Diner in San Anselmo came up on POTN, I figured, ok... I'll go back just one more time. I'll meet Johnny and finally get in a visit to Alcatraz. THEN, I'll be done with the bay area! Well... I've been having a GREAT time! And, I'll be back again. I wouldn't rate it near the Bisbee/Flagstaff "I could see myself living here" side of the scale, but as a vacation destination I'd put it pretty high. Maybe it's all the new and old friends I've been seeing while I've been here. Hmmm... Since I've been rambling so far, I'll continue. I was just watching a documentary on TV about the big 1906 San Francisco Earthquake whose 100th anniversary is just a few days away. Toward the end of the show they did a segment about the '89 Loma Prieta quake, including all the old familiar video we saw on the news when it happened. Only thing is, now that I've been learning my way around the area and can recognize landmarks, I realized it happened right here! I mean right where I'm sitting. That footage showing the big ball of fire from the gas line rupture? You can see the Palace of Fine Arts in the background of that shot! The motel I'm staying in is pretty much right where that fireball was! Good thing I'm checking out tomorrow morning... Besides the two Highway 1 closures I knew about before I left, I later found out about another one between San Francisco and Monterey, so I decided to avoid the hassle of trying to get to Big Sur after all. I had to do SOMETHING on the way home though, so I went to Bill's other favorite place: Hearst Castle. I'd been on the first two tours before, but there were three more I still hadn't taken. I got tour #3 in today. I didn't have enough time left for #4 (the garden tour) though. I also filled up at the second highest price I've ever paid for gas so far: $3.18 at the Shell station in Cambria. The highest price I've paid was $3.35 in Big Sur just over two years ago. Well, actually, Madonna ponied up the money for that tank so I should say it's the highest price I've pumped into my own car. Those prices are for 87 octane, by the way. He was so embarrassed that Sears doesn't provide him with a way to get in touch with another Sears store. Later that morning I did hear him mention to someone else that he does get a small commission on some sales. His main gripe with Sears, as I found out during that morning as I talked to him, was that his base pay is only $6/hr. He's a retiree who found out he couldn't afford to live on his pension in the San Jose/Cupertino area (I got the impression he had retired from Sears in the first place, but I could be wrong about that), so he returned to Sears and that's the best offer they gave him. I don't blame him for bitching. Nobody can live on $6/hr. They're more of a car hybrid than motorcycle (a steering wheel instead of handlebars), but the weirdest looking part is that the two wheels are in front. There's only one rear wheel. We musta looked like the Beverly Hillbillies in retrospect...It was a blast however. We drove that car into the ground...It finally died outside our house and we took the plates off and abandoned it. It was towed a way finally to a decent cemetary. It served us so well. Good on gas... The second tour goes into the outbuildings, around the grounds and fountains and into one of the two basements. The third tour is only done after dark on Halloween and on Friday the 13th. I think that one is basically the same as the main house tour, except they do it with the lights turned out. Each guest is given a flashlight (which you get to keep), and the tour is conducted using only those for lighting. >And is that..a shopping mall across the street? On the north end of the bridge is a vista point with a huge parking lot where everyone pulls over to take pictures of the bridge and San Francisco's distant skyline. That's the only angle I shot the bridge from two years ago. This time I drove around to get different perspectives of it from Fort Point and the road up the hill in Golden Gate Park. The entire city is concreted over, and the numerous wires overhead for the trolleys and buses were way too distracting. I still have the same complaint, but this time I discovered Golden Gate Park, which I was surprised to find is only about a mile or two from the motel I stayed in both times. I just hadn't ventured down that road last time. GGP is has plenty of the green, with grass in abundance and tons of trees. That isn't the entire reason, but it's the only one I can come up with right now. This time, even the concreteness and overhead wires didn't turn me off nearly as much as before. Maybe having friends (plural, by the way -- there were more than one) in the area had a lot to do with it. I covered just a hair under 2,000 miles in that trip I mentioned. That was over six days/five nights, a day or two more than I usually spend on my "short" trips. I met a couple more of my online friends yesterday, which is why I haven't been around here much lately. This time it was two people from Game Driven, that game site I've mentioned here a few times. We spent all day yesterday at Dizzyland. I renewed my annual passport a couple months earlier than I'd planned for this outing. He'll be here for the 4th of July then he goes to San Diego to either Naval Station San Diego or out to the sub base at Pt. Loma. We hope to go down there for a weekend and also have him come up here.
