Hwy 140 to Yosemite closed indefinitely by major rockslide

This is my favorite route into Yosemite from the west. This highway follows the river for much of the way and there are some beautiful waterfalls in the lower canyon. I'm glad that's the way Todd and I went in November when we went to Yosemite so he could see it!

Main road to Yosemite closed indefinitely by major rock slide

Thursday, June 1, 2006

(06-01) 12:25 PDT El Portal, Calif. (AP) --

The central route to Yosemite National Park was closed after a rock slide buried Highway 140 under 300 feet of debris and threatened to knock out electricity to the park, officials said.

No one was injured in the slide about 12 miles from the park, but rocks continued to fall Thursday, preventing crews from removing an estimated 250-300 tons of debris, fire officials said. It was not clear when the road would reopen.

"It looks like the mountain moved right over the road," said Carrie Smith of the California Highway Patrol, who reviewed pictures of the slide. "It looks like there should be a tunnel there, but there's not."

The slide began as a trickle of rocks April 29 and forced sporadic road closures last month. The road reopened last week, but on Monday the intensity of the slide increased.

The slide, which is 600 feet long, 600 feet wide and 300 feet deep, threatened to topple two power line towers carrying 72,000 volts of electricity to the town of El Portal and the park, said Mariposa County Fire Chief Blaine Shultz.

The power lines are the only source of power to the small community and the park and if the towers collapse it could also spark a wildfire, Shultz said.

Motorists were advised to use alternate routes into the park. Highway 41 from the south and Highway 120 from the north were still open.

The closure, however, shut off the town of El Portal and made it difficult for the Mariposa County Unified School District to bus its students, county officials said.

The thing I thought was odd about this story was the CNN headline that called it "The Main Route to Yosemite". That's the main route?? I would have thought Highway 41 gets more traffic. That seems like a more direct route from Fresno, the nearest populous area, and it's the route I take most often. Highway 120 is a close second for me since I sometimes head in from the north.

In fact, I'd never even driven the 140 until this past February when I decided to drive out that way just to see some different scenery for a change. I wasn't too impressed. The scenery along the 41 and 120 is so much better! Especially in February when there's snow on the ground...

I always thought 41 out of Fresno was the "main route."

Wow, is that the highway up out of Merced and Mariposa?

It's the 140 from Mariposa that has the slide. Have you seen the pictures of it? That's a big slide!

Speaking of highway closures, have you seen these pictures of Angeles Crest Highway? http://tinyurl.com/njj6b

I have to wonder if they'll even bother rebuilding it. That might stay closed forever like Highway 39 above Crystal Lake.

My guess is that they call it the "main" route because that is where the tourist from San Fran (and all over the world) come in from.

Can you say, "Smog spewing buses"?

Ya know, seeing as how that route is closed, I wonder if NOW would be a great time to go to Yosemite! Maybe the tourist are going to go somewhere else. (we can only hope!)

I have been there when one of the roads were closed..in fact, it was the 41 out of Fresno, due to a fire. (We came from the eastern side) And lemme tell ya..Yosemite was GREAT! Not crowded..you could get food without waiting in long lines! Great stuff!

Ok, I've been on that route twice. I'll have to go check out the pictures. I think someone quoted in the story Carol posted said it looked like half the mountain came down.

Good question. So far, not much has been done on Hwy 39, right?

I hadn't thought of that. You may be right. Then again, it could mean the other routes are even more congested.

The California group from the Canon photography forum have a trip scheduled for Yosemite in a week or two. This is the first of the group trips that I won't be a part of.

>(We came from the eastern side)

Tioga Pass? That one is still closed for this year with no estimated date yet of when it will be open. They got a lot of snow up there this past winter and the plows are still working hard to clear that highway.

Yes. It's somewhere between Islip Saddle and Vincent Gap. That would put it about 10 miles west of Wrightwood.

Looking at the pictures that show the huge chunk of highway that slid down the mountainside, it doesn't look like there's any foundation left to rebuild the road on. That's why I would suspect they never will, unless maybe they tunnel through the mountain. I doubt they would do that.

It does look that way. The first pictures I found online were taken from above and so far away I couldn't really get any perspective of how big it was. I saw some footage on the news a day or two ago that really showed how massive the slide is.

Highway 39 above Crystal Lake has been abandoned since the 60's. There was some talk two or three years ago about rebuilding it, but after even more of the highway washed away two winters ago, all that talk stopped. I haven't anything since then. I wouldn't be surprised if that one ends up permanently abanded beyond where it is currently closed just beyond the East Fork bridge.

Really? So if the west route is closed and the east route is closed that means only ONE way in and out of the valley! Yea..this would be a GREAT time to visit!

There are two "west" routes - 140 and 120. So right now you can get in and out of Yosemite via 120 or 41.

Oh that's right. I forgot about that. I don't know why I was thinking about the section of Crest Hwy that was blocked last year. Anyway, that's the slide I meant. Is that open?

The west entrance from Highway 120 is still open. The 120 doesn't become Tioga Pass until you're already in Yosemite.

I think you mean't to say there are three, since you listed them all: 140, 120 and 41. The 140 is the one that's blocked by the huge slide right now, and the east side of the 120 is still closed because of snow.

We'll just have to go up the desert side to get there from now on. Thats to bad....It was a great ride through those twistie tall mountains to Wrightwood.

If you're talking about the pictures from a little over a year ago, that was Highway 39. The link I posted a couple days ago (http://tinyurl.com/njj6b) is recent pictures of Angeles Crest Highway. Well... Fairly recent. They were taken in February, I think.

It could be... Using 120 is probably the fastest way to get to Yosemite from Northern California, anyway. But it's still an east-west route for the most part. Hwy 41 is a north-south route that enters the park from the south.

Y'know, I've always felt like that highway was an east-south route, and I think I just figured out why. That's the way I usually go when I'm headed for Highway 49. Highway 49 is definitely north-south, and I pick it up in Oakhurst where it meets the 41 at a right angle, which means I'm heading east on the 41. But, that's where it gets into the mountains and it does a bit of winding around, changing it's course quite a few times up there. But, looking at it on the map, the 41 runs almost as true north as the 49 does.
