Somehow for me Springer Mountain is a place of great magic. Perhaps it is a magnetic pole for ambition. For most, it is a beginning and to some, it is an ending. It is like the first chapter in an epic journey or perhaps the final page. To me the place has an electricity to it. I could spend a long time there enjoying the serenity and the camaraderie of those enthusiastic to begin their epic journey, writing what they anticipate to be one of the most exciting chapters of their life. Beyond the AT and the hype it is still a most wonderful place. I slipped away early this morning to steal some solitude among the rocks atop Springer. How Many ATers Have Posed For Photos On These Rocks? This Eastern Towhee was among the gathering this morning We met Ridgerunner...aka Many Sleeps, perhaps a local legend of the area. He is the volunteer caretaker on Springer. He and I discussed some mutual friends that have passed his way. He has seen many a hiker hit the trail headed for Maine. I failed to get his picture but I did photograph his sign in his camp. I loved his sig line, "If you are lucky enough to be on the trail then you are lucky enough." After I saw the WWW Gals off that morning, with four days of complete solitude and nowhere I had to be, I made my way around to Amicalola Falls, another gateway point to the AT. I enjoyed a leisurely stroll up the trail to the falls and an awesome dreamy day in the park.
