Disneyland Resort Mystery Photo
6/21/06, 10:28am
I let a couple people on a Disney related mailing list talk me into hosting a "Disneyland Resort Mystery Photo of the Day" game a few days ago. You guys are welcome to play along if you want. Right now I'm just doing it every other day until I gather together a good sized collection of pictures to use, then I'll switch to a daily routine.

The first mystery picture (with answer already revealed) is here: http://www.ldphotography.net/disneypics/dl060619/

The second one, just posted this morning and ready to be guessed at is here: http://www.ldphotography.net/disneypics/dl060621/

I'm working on a home page for the game to make it easier for people to navigate to the current photo and scroll through the archives.

This could be fun...

Neat contest!

You should also do one for the "hidden Mickeys" that are all over the place there.

I think saying the cemetary picture is at the Haunted House is too easy, besides it looks too repectful for that. My guess is it's in Frontierland.

By the way, there was an article in the Times the other day about the remodel of the Pirates ride. Not sure if you saw that?

I don't know if even I would do very well in that kind of contest. I haven't found very many hidden Mickey's, but I'm starting to look for them more and more. My favorite that I've found so far (with help ) is in the Haunted Mansion. Where your Doom Buggy goes past the dance hall scene with the long dinner table, one of the place settings has two salad plates above the dinner plate. Sometimes it changes as to which place setting is set up that way, too. They update that fairly often, evidently.

I expected a lot of people to guess the Haunted House. In fact, there are seven cemeteries in Disneyland, four of which are in or around that ride (one is a real cemetery, even!). This isn't one of those, however. It is in Frontierland, but I need you to narrow it down a little more before I can consider that a correct answer, though.

>By the way, there was an article in the Times the other day

Yep, I read it. There's been a lot of talk going on in the Disneyland forums for the past few months. I can't wait to check out the new Pirates ride next week. I'm going to go to the park tomorrow to see the elaborate movie screen and bleachers they've constructed for the big red-carpet extravaganza this weekend. I wish I had an invitation to that shindig!

There's a real cemetary there?????? Really?

I'm not really sure where the one in the picture is, other than I think its in Frontierland.

I did find one hidden Mickey the last time we were there. It was a grouping of stones in Toontown, I think. It's been a long while.

Yes. There are a lot of cats living in the park, and there is a pet cemetery for them behind the Haunted Mansion in the cast member's only area. I've been told that if it's a slow day, the cast member working the ride will take you back there and show you if you ask.

It's kind of funny... A park that's supposedly owned by a mouse had to bring in an army of cats to keep the mice at bay.

I'll look for that one.

Well, I guess a cat cemetary is better than a cat house Funny how Knott's and Disneyland left that part of western life out of their old west parks I guess the closest was the Birdcage Theater at Knott's, sans the "cribs".

The hidden Mickey in Toontown was some foot stones set in the ground just outside one of the buildings. I can't recall which one. It's probably listed on some Disney fan sites.

He's in there now! The ride has been closed for a couple months to film scenes for the next two movies in the series and to make a bunch of changes, including adding Jack and Barbarossa to the ride. There's a huge star-studded, red carpet party tomorrow where they're previewing the ride and second movie. The ride opens to the public on Monday and the movie is coming out July 7th.

I know I guess most people aren't to happy about that either. Personally, I like the idea of updating the FX, but it's typical Disney to get in a plug for their movies.

What's next, Eddie Murphy in the Haunted House ride?

There have been a couple people complaining about it on MousePad, the Disney forum I visit most, but most people seem to be looking forward to it. I'll go on Wednesday or Thursday to see for myself.

I had #4..but the problem *I* have with this is that it is the entire resort..and I have yet to see the California Adventure (except from Google Earth!), so I know nothing of the attractions there.

Sounds like a great excuse for you to go, then.

Yeah, I know not everyone will be able to get these. I'll be using pictures from Downtown Disney and the hotels eventually, too. There just isn't enough at Disneyland to use that park exclusively. I have to throw some in occasionally for people like me, who would be damn near impossible to stump.

I expect very few people, if any, to get the one I put up today. If I don't have any responses by this time tomorrow, I might bring the people from the MousePad forums in. I know some of them will know what it is. That should make the game a lot busier, too. There are a lot of people over there, and there are a few that go to Disneyland every day!

Gosh, I wish! Actually, I am waiting...waiting for my business to do well enough that I can say, "I'M GOING TO DISNEYLAND"...so yea..I really really really really want to get THAT done!

But then...that last picture had a character that looked like Cher...THAT does NOT prompt me to want to go to Calif. Adventure! {shutter!}

I like Disneyland..but everyday? There is something just WRONG about that....

(I bet some of them have a musical toilet paper roll and that sings "It's A Small World"...)

BTW, I looked at Disneyland the other day on Google Earth..and when you look at the entire park, there is this huge section of just trees, just to the west of Main Street. No buildings..just trees.

Cool. I was really surprised at how few people responded to the Pirates of the Caribbean one. I figured everyone on earth would be able to get that one. Maybe I made it so easy that few people felt it was worth responding to.

>But then...that last picture had a character that looked like

Then you'll like the answer when I post it tomorrow...

>I like Disneyland..but everyday? There is something just WRONG
>about that....

The three most infamous daily visitors are dead now. They were all slightly mentally challenged. One was an old guy who lived nearby and the other two were an elderly married couple. They were the only three people who the Cast Members working the gate had standing orders to allow in with out a ticket, no questions asked. The single guy used to sit on a curb outside after closing and a random Cast Member leaving for the day would drive him home.

Of the two on MousePad that I know who go daily, or at least damn near daily, one lives just blocks away and drops in just because it's convenient. The other one works for MousePlanet as a reporter, so his daily visits are kind of a job in a way.

That last guy did something last month that was kind of funny. He challenged himself to ride 11 different roller coasters in one day. He started in the morning at Magic Mountain and ended late at night in Sea World. I forget how many parks he hit total. Something like 7 or 8. He managed to do it with about an hour to spare.

That's the Jungle Cruise ride. The train runs right behind it through some of the trees also.

AH! That would make sense! It doesn't seem like Dizzyland would let a huge hunk of property just sit there!

Here is an idea for your pics too..how about attractions that are no longer there?

Um... That's why I said you would like the answer to the last one. The Superstar Limo ride at California Adventure (the one with Cher in it) was removed five years ago, just a couple months after the park opened. It has the distinction of being the first attraction at that park that was permanently closed.

There aren't many other past rides I can do though, since I don't have pictures of them. I created a whole interconnected site for this game though, and will be accepting picture submissions, so if someone else sends me a shot of the Sky Buckets or something, I'll be able to do that.

The new home page for the game is http://www.ldphotography.net/disneypics/ -- It's updated every two days, so I won't be announcing each new photo here any more. Check the "Archives" page to see more pictures from the old Superstar Limos ride, btw. Whoopi Goldberg and Drew Carrey were in it, too.
