Coming Home
7/5/06, 7:28pm
I'll be heading home tomorrow, and you didn't even know I was gone, did you?

I've been in Northern California for a couple days, one of my several-annual (there's no term for it, so I'll invent one) trips along Highway 49. This time it was to fulfill a couple email requests, both regarding pioneer cemeteries up here. The first, a month or so ago, was from a woman who questioned my labelling one of the cemeteries as the La Grange Cemetery. She thought it was the French Bar Cemetery, and that there was another one nearby called the La Grange Cemetery. I had to investigate that, and it turns out she was right about the La Grange Cemetery, but I can't verify the name on the one I had originally been to. I'll have to take her word for it that's the correct name until I hear or find out otherwise.

The second email was from another woman asking me to look for a Granite Spring Cemetery which she was sure existed, but had heard was all but completely abandoned. I managed to track that one down. It's on private property and off limits to the public. The best I could do was get a picture of the one headstone I could see from the road, from about 200 feet away.

I accomplished both of those tasks on the way up here, and had made no other plans for the trip. These projects got me to thinking about the Pioneer Graves section of my web site and how I just never seem to get around to updating it, despite the fact I'm always taking pictures for it. I'm three years and a few thousand pictures behind in editing and uploading those images! I've been to probably 30 cemeteries up here that aren't represented on that site yet. So, I've been coming up with several ideas for some big changes, one in particular of which will make the editing process much faster and hopefully make my procrastinating a thing of the past. I spent today going from Greenwood in the north to Mokelumne Hill in the south, stopping at most cemeteries I know of to get a few pictures (like I need more!) for a new feature I have in mind. Tomorrow, on the way home, I'll work from Columbia down back to La Grange and French Bar.

Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble, but naturally the first thing I'll do before getting to work on the new ideas will be to get the pictures from this trip online in my Travel section. This will be a pretty strange gallery to most people, though, and most likely only of interest to a select few. I have five or six pictures of my motel room for the gallery (I've stayed here countless times, but it's the first time in this room -- and there are only 10). The rest of the 300+ pictures so far are ALL in cemeteries...

I'm trying to decide if I should fight the crowds and swing through Yosemite on the way home to add some variety to the gallery. Maybe. It's kind of out of the way, but there's no need for me to get home in any hurry.

It must be nice indeed to be on the way home and be able to stop off at Yosemite for an "Oh by the way" kind of a stop. I am envious.

I had a feeling you were on the road.

Was this an Ashley trip?

What gave you the clue? My absence? LOL

Of course, Ashley went along. We went to Jackson. That's her motel. On arrival, she went into the back yard to play with Grace and Turbo and three other dogs who were staying there. I love that place.

I missed replying to Robert's message, didn't I? I did end up swinging through, then stopping, in Yosemite. Too much time, actually. I didn't get home until almost midnight. I guess I must have expected that to happen. There had to be a reason why I cut the trip short by a day, so I could recover in time to return to the slave pit this time (well, hopefully at least an hour earlier) tomorrow.

There was one milestone passed on this trip:

(Yes, I realize how stupid it was of me to take that picture, but I just had to! And she's only two years old... )

LOL! Yeah, I knew someone would say something about that.

Did I tell you about the time on my trip to San Francisco when I decided to test my alignment and see how true it was? I was doing about that same speed on a good long stretch of the 101, and let go of the steering wheel to see how long I could go without having to touch it again to correct my aim. I made it just a little over a mile... To be honest, I'm not sure if the car started to drift or if maybe there was a non-discernable curve in the road.

But I'm a very safe driver! Really!

Yep

I forgot to mention there was a segment on the Gold Rush Country on Travel Channel's "Taste of America" Show. The host, Mark DeCarlo was in Placerville and had "Hang Town Fry", which a historian explained was what miners would order after they hit the motherlode. DeCarlo didn't care for the dish.

That's oysters, innit? Doesn't sound very appealing to me, either.

Speaking of Placerville, the traffic there was terrible this week! They're doing some kind of road construction on the 50 and it had things backed up everywhere else throughout town.

This should probably be in the TV or cooking area but...

I don't care much for that show. The information is interesting, but I think he tries to hard for the humor..and often misses the mark!

Since when has that ever stopped us from hijacking a thread!

I tend to agree, Bill. It's still a show I try to watch every so often. Interesting info, as you said.

She just steers. I have to operate the pedals because her legs aren't long enough. I suppose I could just turn on the cruise control for her.

I have that pic of her in her sunglasses and boots. Sooooo cute! And speaking of animals.......we had two little dogs and a cat on the airplane going to Nashville. One of the dogs was not happy and barked a lot......Anothers owner took him out of his cage and carried him to the restroom. Im not even going to quess what transpired there!

Before K.C. lost his nads he used to hotwire my truck and cruise the strip looking for poodles and ....ugh cats. He kept getting pulled over because when he would hotwire the truck he kept shorting out the blinker switch and would have to stick his paw out the window to signal a turn. That always made the FHP a little suspicous.

Well.....personally I dont care for deadwoodies but to itch his own. I just enjoy the costumes and try to imagine the horrid way people lived in those times. Makes me very thankful for what Ive got.

Janice would agree with you. She really struggles with the dialogue. I tell her its basically obscene Shakespere, but she doesn't buy it. It is very difficult to follow at times. I usually have to go back to hbo.com and read the summary of the episode that they post after it airs.
