PotC Ride
7/13/06, 9:14pm
I finally had my turn to ride the newly updated Pirates of the Caribbean ride today. Three times, even. The lines look prohibitively long, stretching all the way back through Adventureland, but the Pirates line moves fast. Even that far back, it doesn't take any longer than 30 minutes to get on board a boat and on your way.

In some ways, not a whole lot was changed, and in some ways, a lot was changed. The sound is much better now! They replaced over 200 speakers, and now you can hear absolutely everything perfectly clear. All the dialog, all the crickets chirping, etc. The new Davey Jones effect is really cool, though I think they could have done it just a tiny bit better to make it more convincing.

The two new Barbossa figures aren't anything to rave about. The first one replaced the old captain on the ship in the fight scene. The other is now ordering the mayor to be dunked in the well, if he won't tell them where Jack Sparrow is.

The three Jack Sparrow figures are very cool! Well, the first two. The third doesn't do much. I'd heard many people say that the first two are too realistic because they contrast too much against the other, older pirate figures. They're definitely very realistic, but I didn't think it made the rest look bad. They definitely are very lifelike. It really does look like it could be a real person.

They also changed the music a bit. The old "Yo ho ho" song is still there at the beginning and end (remastered and rerecorded), but the middle of the ride uses some music from the movies instead.

They also made the lightning in the scene of the skeleton piloting the old ship much more realistic, and the same for the battle scene. The canon shots sound much better and the splashing in the water is much improved, too.

All in all, I really like the new look.

As you know Im not a Disneyland kinda person but the one ride I always enjoyed was the Pirates. Makes me almost want to go there. The crowds are what keeps me away more than anything I think.

Well, hie thee to Disneyland now! The crowds are inexplicably absent. That's one thing several people have mentioned on the forums. It's summer. It's supposed to be crowded as all get-out. But, it isn't. Nobody is quite sure why...

I would imagine the $60.00 admission price might have something to do with that! At least that is how much my son says the admission is.

Yep, but that's for only one park. If you want a park hopper ticket so you can bounce back and forth between Disneyland and California Adventure, it'll be an extra $20. By that point you're just about to the price of one of the SoCal annual passes, so you might as well get that instead.

That is nuts!!!! How can a family afford to go there, or most any amusement park, anymore? Then you have to add in the cost of parking ($15-$20) and food, etc.

Parking is only $10, but that's still pretty steep in my opinion. The food prices are pretty reasonable at most of the restaurants, unless you want to go to Blue Bayou.

You'd have to save for a while before you could afford to take a whole family there.
