My sister is taking me to Vegas for my birthday. I have no idea where we are staying or what shows we are seeing....Just that she'll pick me up at 6 this morning and have me home by noon on Friday.
Talk to you when I return.........

Ahh thanks Larry.......Kinda missed my birthday here. You talk about HOT! We dont know the meaning of the word here..I kept seeing "BBQ" smoke here and there and realized they have misters everywhere.

Talk about motels and how expensive they can be. My sis took me to the Wynn. Its less than 2 years old and so clean with the most elegant flowers arrangements I have ever seen in my entire life. They have a crew that works an 8 hour shift doing nothing but changing the water.....and flowers every day....

Our room keys/playing card didnt have a hole in it because "that is tasteless!" Oh but its gets better.....All of the carpets are steam cleaned every other day.......every room is purified top to bottom after every stay.......there had to be some kind of room deadners every where because it is so quiet......in the casino.....No wait! Thats because no one is there because they dont pay worth diddly.

But the wierdest part was the entire place was done in ORANGE and RED! Not soothing colors at all......In our room with its spa tub and bathrobes it had ORANGE walls and the ugliest pictures on the walls of huge RED and ORANGE flowers with a black background....Yikes! It made you on edge.....or me anyway.

But I must say......from my wheelchair the service was top drawer. I hurt my knee 2 weeks ago and can barely walk...mentioned it to them and it was ours to take with us all over town for free.

Then again at $250 a night I guess we did pay for it. LOL

We hit 117 here while you were gone (well... they said 119 a little later in the newscast, but I'm pretty sure that was a misquote cuzz they showed the thermometer readout while they said 117). Also, the highest temperature ever recorded in U.S. history was in good old California, and if someone had a thermometer a few miles away we'd probably still have the world record.

I think we know the meaning of the word hot!

But welcome back and happy belated birthday anyway.

Well, there was the first mistake...

>Its less than 2 years old and so clean with
>the most elegant flowers arrangements I have ever seen in my
>entire life. They have a crew that works an 8 hour shift doing
>nothing but changing the water.....and flowers every day....

I toured Wynn a couple days after it opened. I did like the signs hanging from the ceilings of the parking structure at each level telling me exactly how many spaces were free in that level. They put sensors in the parking spaces, and a computer updates the signs so you know whether it's worth your while to continue into that level or not. Nice touch...

Otherwise I was very unimpressed. The smell of the pine trees from the mountain on the strip was overpowering, as was the flower smell throughout the entrance next to the shops. The Ferarri/Maserati dealership was interesting, but not enough to go back twice (and I hear it costs something like $20 to enter now! It was free when I was there).

The casino just plain sucked. And you have to bet something like $500/hand for an hour to even THINK of earning comps if you join their slot club. No thanks!

I didn't stay there, so I can't comment on the rooms, except to say I'd never pay that much for any hotel room. And, $500 for a round of golf in their private course?!? Yeah... I'll be there...

>Our room keys/playing card didnt have a hole in it because
>"that is tasteless!"

That's another thing I've been hearing people complain about. Not the lack of holes, but the fact that the slot club cards double as your room key. People are always walking away from machines leaving those things in the machines. I wouldn't want that to be able to open my room, too...

>some kind of room deadners every where because it is so
>quiet......in the casino.....No wait! Thats because no one is
>there because they dont pay worth diddly.

Probably because the slot club won't give you a damn thing unless you can afford to pay for it anyway. Heh, this reminds me of a picture I took in the casino when I was there...

Yep, the bank of slots had an ad board above it with a Windows blue screen error. LOL!

I didn't know that. Are you doing any better now?

I didn't know about your knee!!!!!! Sorry to hear that! I hope it's 100 better soon.

Hey, try $399/night for the Hilton in SD last weekend!!!! And that was the best price we could find. Even the Hampton Inn gets $235/night down there.

Thanks Lonnie........You may very well be correct. I heard some 140 people died from the heat in CA last week. But there isnt any Global Warming!!

You got that right about the room key doubling as a slot key. We both forgot ours in slot machines and had to hurry back and retrieve them. My sis finally lost hers that way and we had to get new room keys because they have your name on them! Kinda stupid IMHO.

Thanks for asking about my knee.....Its much better but still hurts when I bend it so will see the good doc Monday.

OMG!! Least we split the cost of our room which helped. That would just p....tick me off royally to pay that. We use to stay at a Best Western in SD when we went down there which was pretty reasonable.

Not that I can tell. But, I'll bet we could feel the difference between 117 (or 119) and California's highest recorded temperature of 134!

I was amazed and ticked off, but we had promised my nephew we'd come down for the weekend instead of making him come up here, which he'd done the weekend before that and this weekend. There just wasn't anyhing less expensive available, unless you wanted to stay way out of town.

Yeah, I've left my slot club cards in a machine or two and had to go running back. I sure wouldn't want it to also be able open my room, considering the camera equipment I travel with. I do sometimes wonder how smart I am with my trust of the cleaning crew, though. So far I haven't had any problems there, either. (Knock on wood)

>My sis finally lost hers that way and we had to

Very! I've never seen a hotel print info like that on a room key card. At least they didn't put the room number on it also (or did they?). Of course, that might not be too difficult to get when you have the name, anyway.

Did you try http://www.travelweb.com/ ? I've had excellent luck finding good (which in my book means under $100 and preferably half that) rates, even in expensive areas (like Cambria/San Simeon). So far, only one has been what I would consider a dump -- the airport HoJo in Vegas when I took Ashley there a couple months ago. But there aren't many choices in Vegas when you're travelling with a dog.

U didn't mention that you were one of the not-so-walking wounded! What did you do to yourself?

Maybe Honda makes a Goldwing wheelchair...

DAMM! I have stayed at the Embassy Suites just north of SD for a MUCN more resonable rate!

Geez...at 4 bills a night I would look into the local national forest for a tent site....

Thanks!!! I've got it bookmarked. Would it find stuff that doesn't show up on Expedia, Hotels.com, etc?

It hurt. We tried both Embassy Suites, the one downtwan and the other one and no dice. There was a major comic book convention in town and the "Over The Line Tournament" finals on Fiesta Island in Mission Bay.

The Hilton was really nice but not worth $400/night. Pretty much no place is in my book.

Im sure you've heard about the weather all over the world being so many degrees higher than ever recorded. I guess Japan is one of the few thats actually cooler than normal.

When will we wake up? Will it be before its to late?

Thanks Lonnie....Thought about you today......Mr B and I took a ride up Angeles Crest..via Sunland...And as always came home so refreshed.

The weather dropped down to a comfortable 72....with clear blue skies after driving through a foggy cloud now and then.

Couldnt get my leg to bend enough to rest on the foot peg but it was well worth the trip.

We had a nice lunch at Newcombs before taking the 2 straight to the freeway and home.

Those knee bends can really hurt! Maybe try it (when you are better) in a pool. The water forces you to go really slow so the exercise is slower and thus, less possibility of injury.

Oh hell...better yet..hang out by the pool and just watch the pool guy!!!

Now theres a thought! Actually the pool has really helped reduce the swelling and the pain.

I think I mentioned here about when I was looking for a place to stay on that Cambria trip. I searched all of the hotel reservation sites and the cheapest I could find at the others was about $180. But, TravelWeb quoted $60 for the San Simeon Lodge. I figured it must have been a misprint, but I went ahead and booked it anyway and made sure to print the confirmation email and take it with me in case there was a problem. They never even batted an eye when I checked in. And, by the way, the other sites did have that same motel listed, but at nowhere near that rate.

I've been using TravelWeb for several years now, but that really sold me on them.

Despite all this heat its still green up there.....and we hit it lucky in that the temps had lowered a lot by Sunday. Newcombs has changed hands and has really cleaned up its act....Food was good and medium priced.

Glad to hear it's still green up there, especially with the heat we had recently! I've heard the road is closed not far past Newcombs because of some endangered frog. A few spur roads and hiking trails had been closed a couple years ago because of that, but apparently the frog's habitat is spreading. That just makes it sound even more unlikely that Angeles Crest Highway will be reopening all the way to Wrightwood any time soon. It's almost impossible to get to Mount Islip, my favorite mountain, any more. It's right smack in the middle of where the fires, floods, landslides and frogs have closed things off...

I didn't know Newcombs changed hands again, either. Nice to know they've spruced the place up. I haven't stopped there in two or three years.

What is Newcombs?

I'm guessing it's a cafe. What makes it special, other than the scenery?

There wasnt a road closed sign and there was traffic coming from above Newcombs but maybe you can get up a few miles. Cant believe they would shut it down because of a frog. Geez!

If you take the 210 and take the Angeles Crest Highway 2 cut off it takes you up Big Tujunga Canyon and about 30 miles up ...Im guessing...is Newcombs Ranch. Its been there for many many years and had become pretty run down.....It consists of a resaturant and a two story building with living quarters. At one point in time the employees actually lived there on the weekends.

Food isnt bad and medium priced.......Whats fun is to go up in the winter......and have a meal next to the big wood burning fireplace with snow on the ground outside.

It's the only restaurant on Angeles Crest Highway, about halfway between La Canada and Wrightwood. It has quite a history. Here's a short excerpt from The San Gabriels by John W. Robinson, a coffee table sized book I couldn't recommend more highly, about the history of just about everything in the San Gabriel Mountains:

Chilao received its first tourist resort when Lynn Newcomb, Sr., built the two-story Newcomb Ranch Inn on land he had bought from his cousin Lewis Newcomb in 1929. The Inn, which originally consisted of a 15-room hotel, restaurant, store and gas station, opened in the fall of 1939. Fire destroyed the original structure in 1976. Newcomb Ranch (Inn was dropped from the name) was rebuilt as a restaurant and bar by Lynn Newcomb, Jr. It is the only private establishment of its kind on the Angeles Crest Highway, very popular with cyclists.

I'm not sure what Robinson meant by "cyclists". These days, it's mostly motorcycle riders who visit the place. "Cyclists" usually refers to bicycle riders, but the book is a little old. Maybe when he wrote it, they were the main clientelle.

The road closure I had heard of was up near the Waterman Mountain area. That's about 10 miles beyond Newcombs, if I remember correctly.

Sounds neat!!

I'll have to check it out.

Matt and I went gold panning at Follows Camp on the East Fork a few years ago. We had lunch in their great, old cafe. Really good burgers. I hear it's all closed up now

It doesn't surprise me that it closed, unfortunately. After the fires and floods from the past three or so years, that entire area has really gone to seed.

Theres another fun place to eat on the desert side going to Wrightwood. Its called the Mile High Cafe in Valyermo. Its on Mt Emma Road.

Hey Lonnie...could we get to Wrightwood that way?

Yep. Follows Camp was supposedly bought out by some Japanese investors. I'm not sure what their plans are. They gave 30-day notices to all the residents and that was it. It was a neat, old historic mining camp.

I think Camp Williams farther up the road is still open. But I haven't heard anything.

Since last years floods more gold has been showing up, having been washed out of crevices and the like.

I would think you could. I haven't heard of any road closures from that direction, but I also haven't heard any trip reports from anyone hiking Mount Baden-Powell in a very long time, and that's the only way to get there these days. I'll have to look around on a couple forums I haven't visited lately and maybe ask around...

Wow... You even know Mt. Emma Road? You know your way around the area almost as much as the hikers.

I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley and lived just blocks from the mouth of big TJ Cny for 13 years. We use to do a fair amount of hiking up there as well.

I remember one windy dirt road up to a water tank we use to hike on summer nights. We'd sit on the water tank and look at the stars. A wonderful site on a clear night..........
