Mount Vesuvius... still alive!

This is a video from our recent trip where you can see the steam still rising out of portions of the volcano. I dubbed over it because all you could hear was the strong wind...

That is awesome. Was the pit in the picture the vent area of the volcano and was that steam still rising from it too.

Neat stuff!!

That must have been amazing. You might have mentioned before, but how did you and Marie get up there?

Hi Robert:

I looked at the video as if I was seeing it for the first time, and it does look like there might be steam coming from inside the crater, but that was just sunlight haze, I think.

There were only two or three very small pockets with steam coming out, and not an incredible amount...

A bus took us most of the way, but we were able to hike the last 1000 feet (about 900 feet, actually), which was a REAL pain in the butt if you aren't used to steep inclines (I had to stop three times, at least, because my calves started to lock up on me).

If you look right at the end of this video, on the bottom right, you can see the trail.

The really neat thing was to see the backdrop of Vesuvius from Pompeii, knowing that the volcano spewed so far that it was able to blanket the entire town in lava... here is a repost of one of my favorite photos in Pompeii, with Vesuvius in the backdrop.

Could you just imagine what it was like when this thing exploded? Eek.

That must have been amazing, especially since this is still an active volcano.
