October is a beautiful month to be in the mountains

October is a beautiful time to be in the mountains above Springville! The weather is generally mild and the sky blue. The air is crisp but not too cold yet. Many animals like squirrels and quail are out and about gathering acorns and seeds and otherwise preparing for winter. And, best of all, the black oaks begin to turn to their autumn hues and they punctuate the mixed-conifer forest with bright gold and rust tones.

Thanks That is the very creatively named "Dome Rock", lol It is about a 10-20 minute walk to get to the top of it and it's also very popular with rock climbers.

Nice to see glaciated domes outside Yosemite NP.

Actually, it's not glaciated. Neither are all the domes in Domeland Wilderness. The way granite often weathers is called exfoliation - slabs of granite sort of like onion layers wear off and eventually give granite a rounded shape.

You can tell a glaciated granite dome from a non-glaciated by looking at the surroundings. The lower part of the Kern Canyon where Dome Rock is has a definite V-shape to it which means it was carved by a river, not a glacier. Yosemite Valley has a definite U-shape to it which means it was carved by a glacier, not a river. Hope that makes sense...

It does I minored in earth science in college.

The dome was so rounded it looked glaciated. Neat!

I need to go back to King's Canyon. I was only there once way back when I was in college.

Glorious pictures Carol as usual...Makes me want to go outdoors and look around.

I have an incrdible scenic view out back of my home here in Las Vegas.

I look at the lake first then the Red Rock Mountains. Breath taking colors at different times of the day, as well as evenings. The heat in the desert makes for interesting colors too.

Beautiful photos! I was in that area a couple of weeks ago and the fall colors were exactly like in your pics. Very golden.
