Where has Thomas been?
12/6/06, 12:02pm
I got this message privately, but felt I should reply publicly, so you all know why I haven't been around here much.

I know Lonnie is busily improving, moving his web site

My web site changes will eventually tie into the business ideas I'm working toward, so Bill and I are kinda on the same page. But, boy is this taking a lot of work! I've never been this constantly busy in my life...

For those who I haven't clued in, I'm completely revamping my web site. First, I switched everything to a new host, so I'd have more reliability, storage and bandwidth. Moving the forum was the biggest headache, but I got it done, and learned a lot about PHP and MySQL in the process (which helped immensely in step #2). I still have a small problem with the forum, but it's a minor inconvenience and I'm going to worry about it later...

Step #2: For the past month or so I've been redoing the "Travel" section. I'm getting very close to completion there... I *HOPE* to have it done in the next week. The software was installed and configured weeks ago, but I have so many gigabytes of photos to upload it's just taking forever! Even at DSL speed. And when they're uploaded, the different file sizes and thumbnails need to be generated, and the captions added, etc. I'm up to April, 2006 in this step, but my photo galleries from this year have included an abnormally large amount of photos, so even though there are fewer galleries, there are actually more pictures. Which means, more time consuming work... If you would like to have a sneak peak at what the end result will look like, have a gander this way: http://www.ldphotography.net/eeTravel/

Step #3: I get to do step #2 all over again with the "Hikes" section of my site. Boy, am I looking forward to that... There are many, many more of those galleries to move, but they're all much smaller than the Travel ones, so I anticipate that going a little quicker. Plus, I've already learned so much about PHP, MySQL and eE, I'm experienced now...

Step #4: Figuring out what to do with the "Graves/Cemetery" side of the site. I have a different software package I intend to use for that. I already installed it, but haven't configured it yet or even decided if that's what I'll eventually actually use. This is a decision I'll make sometime in the future.

Step #5: Creating the "Fine Art" (ie: money-making) side of the site. I bought the software I'll be using for this section a long time ago. But, I have to set everything else up before I even start thinking about trying to get this up and running...

So... I'm going to be pretty scarce around here for quite a while yet. Just thought I'd let everyone know.

Wow... sounds like exciting stuff. I have NEVER been able to get MySQL.

I *KNOW* it would improve things here IMMENSELY (particularly avoiding the erased userfiles, screwed up message read counters, etc), and it would be so much more compact, nice, and probably speedier.

Everything here is done with text files, and I have seen the gamut of problems associated with that.

Anyways, I am looking forward to seeing the finished product [this does help explain a bit why you deleted all the messages in your rrbbs blog, too?]...

Wow! You do have a full plate.

I like the new web page layout, by the way.

Stop by here when you get a chance. We miss you otherwise!

Well I for one have missed your retelling of your adventures and your great photos of them.

Look forward to your return to the fold.

Next time you come to Vegas, I want to join you in your explorations of the desert. I am not a hiker, but maybe I will force myself Ready to try new things. You bring Ashley and I will bring my spunky Wickett (he is not afraid of anything).

The new look, by the way, is REALLY professional looking. Nice job.

It always intimidated me, too. But when I was moving the forum from one server to another, I backed it up on my old server first, using MyPHPAdmin. Instead of saving the database to a text file, it displays it in the browser window so you can do a "Select All" and "Copy". When the display came up, I was surprised to see it was just a plain, comma delimited text file, and was easy to read. I could see all of the forum messages, userfile account definitions, etc. It instantly became a lot less intimidating to me.

I haven't actually written any routines yet that use a MySQL database, but I don't think it would be too rough for me to do so now.

Oops. I forgot to reply to this part, too.

Yes, that's why I deleted my blog. I planned to delete all of the images from the old folders once the new format is done and live. I've since started to reconsider that, though. Storage space is not a concern with my new host (I get 50Gb -- much more than I'll probably ever need), so I can leave the jpg files behind in the old folder structure to preserve the links I still have around here, on the Canon forum and other places. I probably should have left my RRBBS blog alone after all.

BTW, I also get a terrabyte per month of bandwidth, and more perks and online utilities than I've seen from any other provider, all for only $6.95/month. If you're tempted to make the move yourself, let me know. I signed up for their affiliate program, so I get a check for $60 for each person who signs up by following the link on my site.

I'm sure we can find something to do together. Have you been to Valley of Fire? That's my favorite place to visit out that way.

I don't get to bring Ashley to Vegas very often. There aren't many dog-friendly places to stay there, and none at all on the Strip. When I took her last May, we stayed at the Knight's Inn, part of the Ramada Inn by the airport. It was kind of a dump, but I didn't have a whole lot of choice.

Thanks. I really like it.

The Exhibit Engine software I'm using, by the way, was written by Pekka Saarinen, a guy from Helsinki who also happens to host that Cannon forum I've mentioned here several times before. He did a really good job on it!

I just found out that there's a bug in the software I'm using for my new Travel section where the thumbnails don't show up for people using IE, so some of y'all may not have been seeing my new look as it was intended. A fix has been released and I'll be patching things over the next two or three days, so that should definitely be remedied by the time I add a new gallery for the pictures I'll be gathering on next week's trip...

hi there Lon...sorry didn't see your response until now.

I have never been to Valley of Fire. I would really love the adventure.

Let me know when you get the notion to come this way

Will do. I'll probably end up going again in a couple months. Maybe late February or so. When I ever get around to setting a date and making reservations, I'll let you know.
