I was speaking from recollection of reading about these bears and some of my original facts might be wrong. I think the greatest threat to these bears is the loss of habitat due to logging and perhaps human encroachment on habitat....We live in such an industrial society. Consumption and extraction of resources seem to be the order of the day. We have to fuel that ever hungry industrial society.
I was reading a book recently and the writer described a person he was about to debate on the topic of natural Alaska. He described the person by saying that he seemed to shave his face the way he wanted to see the Tongass Forest cut..."From horizon to horizon and close to the roots.
I think we are out of touch with natural ecosystems....and big industry seems to be leaving the U.S. for less restrictive places. To me this seems to circumvent the capitalist nature of our economy and any environmental measures of our government. The desire seems to be cheap labor and less restrictions.
As for protecting the spirit bears, I would say support any efforts to conserve their area...they live in Canada so much depends upon the Canadian and British Columbia governments.
As I said earlier I might not have my facts in order especially on the number of spirit bears....I read somewhere that their population is around 100 but that may be limited to just the current population of white color phase bears....it has a lot to do with genetics so it doesn't depend solely on the existing number...two black color phase bears can produce the white color phase due to recessed genetics.
I seem to recall that there is also a blue color phase that lives in Alaska and is very rare as well. These are known as glacier bears and I seem to recall seeing a taxidermied specimen on display at the University of Fairbanks. The museum there is something to see if you ever make it to Fairbanks.
