Robert, I looked up "Spirit Bears" as you suggested, and have found art galleries and pictures like the following:

also this larger photo of this unique guy:

I fell for it, I thought Spirit Bears were alive. lol I am still looking them up. I saw a great one with a judges wig on.

Spirit Bears in the City is a celebration of public art that brings together business, the arts and tourism to benefit children. Companies and individuals are invited to sponsor one or more seven-foot-tall white Spirit Bear fibreglass sculptures. Each one will be transformed by a well-known B.C. artist into a piece of public art for display on city streets in the summer of 2006, with the sponsorship funding going to offset the production costs of the event.

Ceramic Cows have been an interesting medium for artists to express themselves and sell for charity too. This one was in Luxembourg. Full Size Sculptures.

I was not trying to mislead you Ms. Saundra. Spirit bears are a white color phase of black bears. There are estimated to be fewer than 100 of them in existence today. They live on an embattled island off the coast of British Columbia. The timber that makes up there habitat is desired by logging interests and the continued existence of these bears is very threatened. I'll attach some links. I appoligize if it seemed I was sending you after wild geese....(They would have been a little easier to find.)

Oh how funny. You gave me a project and I love doing research on the computer. I get an E for effort...My search engines took me first to what I posted but there was so many links just didnt get to the live ones.

These bears look like polar bears. So the picture I posted was really a spirit bear because they are still said to be black bears. I thank you for adding to my knowledge. What can we do to help the 100 left keep going? Is man hunting them for the fur?

I was speaking from recollection of reading about these bears and some of my original facts might be wrong. I think the greatest threat to these bears is the loss of habitat due to logging and perhaps human encroachment on habitat....

We live in such an industrial society. Consumption and extraction of resources seem to be the order of the day. We have to fuel that ever hungry industrial society.

I was reading a book recently and the writer described a person he was about to debate on the topic of natural Alaska. He described the person by saying that he seemed to shave his face the way he wanted to see the Tongass Forest cut..."From horizon to horizon and close to the roots.

I think we are out of touch with natural ecosystems....and big industry seems to be leaving the U.S. for less restrictive places. To me this seems to circumvent the capitalist nature of our economy and any environmental measures of our government. The desire seems to be cheap labor and less restrictions.

As for protecting the spirit bears, I would say support any efforts to conserve their area...they live in Canada so much depends upon the Canadian and British Columbia governments.

As I said earlier I might not have my facts in order especially on the number of spirit bears....I read somewhere that their population is around 100 but that may be limited to just the current population of white color phase bears....it has a lot to do with genetics so it doesn't depend solely on the existing number...two black color phase bears can produce the white color phase due to recessed genetics.

I seem to recall that there is also a blue color phase that lives in Alaska and is very rare as well. These are known as glacier bears and I seem to recall seeing a taxidermied specimen on display at the University of Fairbanks. The museum there is something to see if you ever make it to Fairbanks.
