As promised to Carol, here's the reply I received from one of the NPS rangers here. Very interesting stuff, though sad in a way..... Larry, The mountain lion that was hit by the car was P9. We have been tracking mountian lions for about 5 years now and it all started with P1. P1 mated with P2 and had 4 kittens P3-P6. We also caught and collared 2 cats in the Simi Hills P7 and P8. P1 killed P2 and 2 of the offspring. P7 and P8 were hit by cars and died. There was another male offspring that was killed by an unknown cat. We caught this cat about 1 month ago (P9). So what we have today is one female P6 and P1 and we have photos but have been unable to catch possibly another female in the mountains. With competition for space and all the hazards, there is a population but it seems to remain small. -Ken Low Park Ranger -------------------------------------------------------- " I lift up mine eyes to the hills, whence cometh my help.", Psalm 121 --------------------------------------------------------
