>To make a long story short, we wrongfully assumed that
>a backpacking trip in late June into the high country would
>only require summer weight gear.It makes my pack heavier, but when I'm headed into the higher elevations I always carry my jacket. Last year when I climbed Whitney, I had to put that and my fleece gloves on just below the summit because it got so cold. That was on July 15th! You just never know what to expect up there...
Well, I'm home now. I left Jackson at about 8am, with no real idea what I was going to do for the day except point the car in the general direction of home. A couple hours later I found myself heading up Highway 120 into Yosemite. I'm not sure how that happened...
It's hard to believe a blizzard just went through there a few days ago. Even in the upper elevations there's very little snow left. It all melted pretty fast. Nowhere near what I saw around Tahoe! I got a few new pictures of Half Dome, El Capitan (couldn't see any climbers on it) and Bridalveil Falls which I'll be posting here soon. Unfortunately the road to Glacier Point was closed, so I couldn't get up there.
Also, if anyone is planning to head up north, DO NOT COME HOME ON HIGHWAY 99! Avoid it at all costs! They're doing some work on a bridge just north of Bakersfield and the detour for the southbound traffic sucks, to put it mildly. It took me an hour and 14 minutes to cover four (yes, I said FOUR) freakin' miles!
