Someone asked me for the story on the Canon forum too, and this was my reply: Walter Scott, known as Death Valley Scotty, lived from 1872 to 1954. He's buried with his dog Windy on the hill overlooking the castle that bears his name. He didn't build it though, and never owned it. It was built by a man named Albert Johnson. Scotty was a con-artist and sometimes cowboy in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. He claimed to have found a gold vein in Death Valley and convinced a few rich people back east to invest in it. There was no mine. He was fleecing them. He would keep writing back asking for more money saying a flash flood had wiped out his equipment or a landslide washed it away. If they wanted to see a sample of the ore he would claim to have sent it to them and that the wagon was attacked by Indians and everything was stolen. One of his investors, Albert Johnson, an insurance magnate, finally decided to go there and see the mine in person. He found out that it didn't exist, but he also fell in love with Death Valley and for some reason befriended Scotty, who had been ripping him off. Albert and his wife Bessie visited the area every winter, but Bessie didn't like camping or the cramped quarters in Scotty's cabin, so she asked Albert to build her a house. He ended up spending $2,000,000 (during the depression!) building this mansion until one day in 1931 when there was a knock at the door. It was a government agent who informed him that a surveying party had just discovered that the land Mr. Johnson had bought was actually a mile southeast of there. He had built his mansion on government property because his maps were screwed up. Construction stopped immediately. Six years later he finally managed to acquire the land under his mansion via a "landslide grant" quietly passed through Congress for a fee of $1.25, but he never resumed construction, so there are some incomplete parts of the estate (like the enormous swimming pool and the garden area). The house came to be known as Scotty's Castle because Scotty, ever the con-man, told everyone it was his and that he had built it with the proceeds from his (non-existent) mine. Mr. Johnson didn't care if anyone knew the truth so he just played along with Scotty's story. It definitely is an interesting, and somewhat spooky sculpture. My favorite is Ghost Rider, the similar one with the bicycle. The poles near the exhibit have a bunch of pipes and things nailed to them so when the wind blows it makes spooky moaning sounds. I went there late one night last week for some long exposure shots. Fortunately the wind wasn't blowing, because if I heard ghostly moaning sounds there after dark, I don't know if I'd have the nerve to stick around... >And you have to love what Scotty's memorial says... Last year, I took a drive out there trying to find it. I figured if I couldn't, at least it would be near the agates on Hubbard Rd. Anyway, I followed the directions and couldn't find anything. Then I spotted an old mine workings on the south side of Hwy 14, rather than the north, on top of a ridge directly across from Acton High School. I think that is Escondido Canyon Rd? It's the one before Crown Valley. Now, this could be the Red Rover Mine, or it could be the Govenor Mine. Not sure which, but there is something on top of that ridge and a dirt road up to it. There is a Red Rover Mine Rd too, so I don't know which mine it is that I saw. In any case, I hiked around a dry wash next to Escondido Canyon Rd. and found a lot of quartz and took some soils samples home. This panned down to a lot of black sand, but no gold. What would be really cool is going over some of the mine tailings with a metal detector, but I don't have one. Also out Davenport Road is a huge deposit of howlite which they make white stone jewelry from. Bikes can take a dirt/gravel road far better than a normal passenger car! And that road certainly is no threat to a car. I wouldn't hesitate to take a bike up there. The dirt road from Agua Dulce Canyon Road to the parking lot/picnic area is only about a half mile or so. Just keep it around 25mph or so and you'll be fine. No need to cancel and make other plans because of that! I've driven a low-clearance Chevy Cavalier about 30 miles through Holcomb Valley before (high clearance, 4wd recommended). OK, I love to tell this story so I will tell it again. On one of the computer camp outs, we had tables set up with oh..4 or 5 working computers and disks and such. At one point, there was a group of "seniors" that decided that WE were some sort of entertainment and started to basicly, tour our camp and see what we were doing. I remember distinctly, standing with Larry Barr and just watching this group, watch us. At one point, an elderly lady says to Larry, "What are you guys doing out here?" And Larry says, "oh, we are playing computer games and such." And she says, "you came all the way out here to play computer games?" So Larry says, "Well, what are YOU doing out here?" And she says, "just going for a walk". Larry then says, "You come all the way out here just to go for a walk??"
