Or not a problem at all.......Mr Bs computer is completely dead. Wont even boot up...what does that mean? The lights on on the monitor and harddrive but it doesnt do anything when you push the button. We've unplugged it from the wall and started over to no avail.

I'll check here in an hour or two for answers and thanks for the help.

What does "The lights on on the monitor and harddrive" mean? Do you mean the computer's power light is lit? Are you sure the monitor is plugged in securely?

What color is the power light on the monitor? If it's green, it's getting a signal from the computer. If it's amber, it isn't.

Just a guess, but if memory serves, Mr. B doesn't use a firewall, right?

If he doesn't, let this be a lesson to him. He has very likely picked up a virus or a worm.

Just happened to my Dad... computer went into the shop and is probably getting reformatted.

Both the computer and monitor lights are amber. Thanks for the help Rob.

Yes he does......He uses Zone Alarm just like I do...so you dont think its the Motherboard but sounds like a virus?

Doesn't sound like a virus. I think you will still get the BIOS messages, etc and then it would crash when the OS starts to load. Not certain about that. Sounds like a hardware failure, probably mother board or maybe the HD?

Thats what my son said...it sounded like the motherboard. Okay so if it is now what? Would you take it in or just buy a new one?

My money would be on it being a mother board problem too. The same thing happened to me with Matt's desktop a year or so ago. I had purchased a network card and installed it in his PC. When I turned it on...nothing. I took it to a repair shop I know and the guy confirmed the mother board was fried. Most likely by some short on the network card. In Matt's case the PC was a few years old and out of date, so it made more sense to buy him a new one. If that's the case, Dave might want to take a look at Dell and Gateway. They have some nice back to school deals going.

Thanks for the input Larry. Its a Gateway computer with Win 2000 on it and from day one its acted strange. Has always booted extremely slow so no surprise it went south.

But the monitor...keyboard...mouse and speakers are great so he logged onto Comp USA today and bought a really good harddrive. Not sure what to do with the dead one.

When you say "hard drive", you mean he ordered a new case and motherboard, cpu and hard drive? What about the operating system? If not, was it a hard drive problem rather than the mother board? I'm a little confused here.

Right, when we ordered the new PC from Dell a year or so ago, I didn't order a monitor because we have a pretty nice one.
