I just upgraded my Zone Alarm and its sent my computer south. Please tell me again why I need it?

I just uninstalled the whole d%$@ thing and now I can update Norton and use my browser without it hanging up my whole computer.

Thanks for you help.

I've been reading a lot lately about ZA5 causing problems with some computers, while others are just fine. There was a discussion recently on the Canon Digital Photography Forum about it, but I just looked there and can't find anything in there that might be helpful to you. I'll look around.

I haven't upgraded yet, myself.

If you don't have a firewall, other computers can easily access your computer, seeing what you have on your computer... and, worse, using your computer as a conduit to -- say -- hack into an FBI site.

It would be really simple to install a program on your computer that would allow a remote user to see anything that you typed... including credit card numbers.

Well DON'T. It hangs up my whole computer when I open my browser but not every time. Just uninstalled it for the second time after fighting with it all day.

I have a firewall in my router but guess I should find an old version of ZA and put it back on here....what a pain! The old one worked great.

I wasn't really planning to. The version I'm running now does a good enough job for me. I haven't seen anything to compel me to upgrade yet. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Didn't you mention to me that you have a linksys router? That has a firewall built in..you don't need ZA and it WILL conflict with the linksys. (You DID change your password on that router, right?)

Yep I changed my router password after our last conversation about it here. I did like the old ZA. It seemed to block things my other programs didn't and worked like a charm.

I have a linksys router... while using ZA, it still tracks users hitting my IP. Does this mean I have the router firewall off?

I am not an expert on firewalls, but I DO know what I have read. First off, there are LOTS of reports that ZA does not work well with hardware (a la Linksys) firewalls. Some people have better luck than others..for me, ZA caused all sorts of probs and seeing as how I checked my firewall and it came out fine anyway, I don't worry about it. Second, a firewall is not a piece of plastic that keeps everything out..something has to come through else there would be no connection. The "hits" that you are seeing could be coming from your http port or even an open ftp port.

Bottom line is, you should always check your firewall. I use GRC.com.

Also, according to everything I have read, a hardware firewall..even a crappy one, is better than a software firewall. This is because of things like CPU lag and vulnerabilities that make it a bit more "pourus" than a hardware model.

Really appreciate the feed back here. I found and loaded an older version of Zone Alarm and it won't load so I'm done.

One message I read about the problem suggested users of XP activate the Microsoft firewall in their system.

Tell me about that........

That's too bad. I hadn't even started to look for the installation files for the old version I'm running. I guess I won't bother looking, now.

I don't run XP so I know not of this situation. Sorry.

Call it over kill......In going through all the comments on ZA problems someone suggested the Sygate firewall. I installed that..Anybody futzed with that one before? Not that there's much to it.

I've never even heard of that one. Where did you get it from?

Put it in a search engine and up it came. It sure doesn't have all the features ZA had and no doubt Bill is correct that I don't need it...

BTW just for the heck of it I ran AdAware last night and it found 35 little goodies embedded in my computer. One was listed as a hacker. Grrrrrrrrrrrr
