Spam, Spam, Spam
6/25/04, 7:29am
Is anyone else here getting flooded with spam suddenly? About a week ago I started seeing quite a bit more than usual, and it's been getting worse every day. I don't know what could have set this off. I saw on the news where another spammer was arrested. Hopefully that will put a damper on this again soon. It's getting rediculous...

I just read an article in PC mag about how to slow spam down. It suggested that if your email address is in a web site ANYWHERE...change it to read someoneATsomewhereDOTcom

It cuts out 98% of the spam in tests done.

See BBlast's message regarding the latest internet attack... I would guess that it has a lot to do with that.

I have also been experiencing notable delays in the past week or so on both our primary computers at home. At first, I thought someone was hacking into our wireless... still could be that... but I wonder if we're infected with that virus.

To answer your question, I get so much soam on daily basis that I can't tell if there has been an increase.

Yes, I have been getting a TON of spam lately. And it's for pornography sites.

Now, at first I wondered if Dave had been up to something he didn't want to tell me about, BUT I am getting them at my work email address as well.

I do that where I can, but it isn't always possible or practical. Funny thing, though, is out of the dozen or so POP email addresses I have, the one I get all the spam at is the one that isn't mentioned on any web site. The rest are, but I don't get spammed on them... Well, I do get some spam at the other addresses, but no more than a couple a day.

Hmmm. I never would have thought it would have something to do with that, but I suppose it could. Especially if it's sending viruses out. Speaking of that, we got hit pretty bad earlier this week at work by the Sassar virus again.

I used to get a lot until Earthlink got their spam filters working good. Then it dropped significantly. Only a couple a day would get through. Now it almost seems like their spam filters stopped working...

Almost all of the spam I've been getting lately is for cheap prescription drugs. I've also been getting the Nigerian scam ones about four or five times a week lately.

Spam..it seems like every few months I give the same advice when it comes to spam.

Spam will happen, no matter how much you try to hide your email. If you take that into account, then the "throw-away" email is the ONLY option you have. Keep your current email...but start to use the throw away for anything that wants an email addy but you don't want to give out your "real" one. Hotmail, msn, mail.com..all offer FREE mail. Yes I know..you have to deal with ads and such..but a small price to pay. When I check my throw-away, it has TONS of spam that I just delete as a block.

Also, when you get spam, DO NOT OPEN IT! There are javascripts that will tell the spammer that you opened up your mail! Always check out anything that looks funny by looking at the source. (and when you do, you will find some very cleaver people out there..LOTS of ways to fool filters!)

I just read that a THIRD of people with wireless don't have the security turned on!! That is MILLIONS of people with open web connections!

Talk to Earthlink and see what they have to say..those guys are pretty good about their filters so maybe they have some additional info.

What I got this morning was RETURN email unable to deliver! A hacker is using my email address to send out spam. Now that ticks me off! How do they do that?

Or better yet, get your own domain. I get a couple hundred POP email addresses and unlimited email forwarders with my ldphotography.net domain, and I can add, delete and change them as much as I want. If one starts getting too much spam, I just kill it and create a new one. And, no ads to deal with...

Might be worth a try. I've always felt that dealing with Earthlink support is about as effective as slamming my head against a brick wall, though. This all might be a moot point soon, anyway. I think I've finally decided to throw away this dial-up account and go with DSL. A guy I work with went with DSLExtreme recently, and he's been very happy so far. He's getting really nice transfer speeds, too. And, now that I have a car stereo that can play MP3's, I need a fast connection to start hoarding them with...

It's a lot easier than you might think...TOO easy. What is happening is, that someone, someplace has an infected computer..and that computer has various email addresses on it. Yours...the PTA group..the softball team, etc. A nasty little program comes around and gathers ALL those emails. Then it starts to send itself out to some on the list..while at the same times, it grabs just one out of the list as the "sender". Some of the email addys on this infected computer are no longer any good..so they are "returned"..but..they were sent out with someone else's address on it, so the "return" goes back to that person! All this is done with WAY too much ease!

MSN, Yahoo, AOL....all are working on this with various ideas as to how to combat this situation..but so far, there is a lot of talk and not a lot of "doing".

In the dentist office the other day I saw a PC mag with people offering up domains with names for like 5 bucks a month.

What is the going price these days for a hosting service/domain anyway?

When I used to have Earthlink, I found that the ONLY time to talk with someone with REAL knowledge was the middle of the night. You work odd hours, so try that..apparently they run less people at night so the ones they put there have to know their stuff.

If you have the choice, go with cable rather than DSL. Cable is faster and you don't have to wait for the start up. (DSL can take a month or more!) Also, DSL rides on top of one of your phone lines...so if you want to use that line for other data..fax or a dial up, the filter will get in your way and you need to either remove it use a diff line. Causes lots of probs in my business because a doc will have DSL but then their dial up doesn't work.

Thanks Bill...
Must say Yahoo does a super job of filtering most all of my spam but I always check there before deleting it because it tends to throw in an occasional note from a friend.

Guess with all my contacts and my address in print so many places its inevitable somebodys address book would get infected.

I just signed up our homeowner's association at canaca.com... pretty good pricing... I use canaca for baseballgeeks.

$3.95/month, U.S. plus $10/year for the domain registration = 5GBs monthly bandwidth, 40GBs harddrive real estate... very nice.

Not bad. I pay $9.95/mo and $10/year.

>5GBs monthly bandwidth, 40GBs harddrive real estate...

Are you sure you don't have those numbers reversed? The bandwidth is always the bigger number that I've seen. I get 5Gb of HD space and 20 or 30Gb of bandwidth (I forget the exact number for bandwidth, but it's somewhere in that ballpark).

Doh! You're right... maybe you should look into those folks. BaseballGeeks runs on em. I just might convert over this site to em as well...
