Our 'baby' Buddy

Our valiant pooch Buddy (aka "Buddisima") who has dutifully performed his part as "our baby," while we wait for one of our own, has developed a tumor on his belly that the vet told us is cancer.

Buddy is scheduled for a removal surgery and biopsy next week, so if you could throw a prayer or two his way, we'd appreciate it.

Marie and I are optimists, by nature, and we don't go out of our way to ASSUME the worst and to act as if something is bad until we have the actual knowledge.

Buddy is 9 and a half, so we know we weren't going to have him in our lives for too much longer... but we're certainly not ready to let him go just yet.

He is still spry as ever... unfortunately, he just likes the sun a bit too much (the tumor was caused by the sun).

Needless to say, we have Buddy in the house today (per doctor instruction)... by himself. It will be interesting to see if he is behaving himself.

I'll definately keep Buddy in my prayers. Sophie also had cancer, which in her case was in the form of a large tumor on one of her hind legs. The doctor removed it and it was about two years before it grew back. Even then, she lived on for several months without it bothering her.

Actually, for a beagle, 9 is not all that old. I've seen many small dogs live well into their teens. Its the big dogs, like Sophie was, that usually only live about 9-10 years or so, though she lived until she was almost 18.

Thanks everybody. Buddy, the Regal Beagle, is my first dog. I was never allowed to have a pet when I was a child, so I never knew how much love a pet can give.

I really didn't want Buddy, until Rob put his foot down and said, "I like him! We're getting him!" So, when we took him home, I was too proud to participate in feeding or grooming him, because I was taught that "dogs are dirty". Well, Buddy was dirty.

When we brought him home from the pet store, he pooped and puked in his crate in the back seat of Rob's car while he howled like crazy! I didn't like the little critter. And when we let him out of the crate (when we got home), he started running around our front yard like a maniac! I was not amused!

But one afternoon (about 2 weeks later) when I was waiting for Rob to come home while I sat at the front porch of our house, and I let Buddy run like a maniac in the front yard, I realized that I LOVED him when he came and sat next to me, and he leaned against me. He just melted my heart. Since then, he's been the Buddy of my life!

The news about Buddy having cancer just didn't sink in until I as washing dishes last night. Buddy was keeping me company in the kitchen. When I looked over my shoulder to see his big, brown, beagle eyes, I started to cry. He probably was thinking, "What's the matter with my mommy?" He looked confused.

I pray that Rob and I will have Buddy for a little bit longer. When I look at him, he doesn't look sick. He seems so happy and energetic. He eats like a pig! So, those are good signs that MAYBE Rob and I will have him for a little bit longer. We pray that the surgery will help. But no matter what, I will always be thankful for the time we had, and have, with him and just enjoy the time we have left with him. I just can't waste my time dwelling about the possibility that we will lose him. Buddy will always be in my heart and will never be forgotten.

He was well behaved today. Rob and I had to leave him inside the house, so he wouldn't be exposed to the sun. When I got home from work, there was no poop or pee. I took him for a walk and he did his "business".

When I set up house at the age of about 27 (after ridding myself of two evil wives) I bought a house out in the country to live alone for a while. This is where I developed into a hermit, but I had to have someone to talk to. I had plenty of friends, but none of them were "just right". I found a young lady that was moving with her husband in the service and could only take one of her Black Lab pups. She gave me the big, hard to handle male.

I took him home and "Sport" became my first dog as an adult. We developed a bond unlike anything I had experienced before. After he grew to the size of about 80 lbs, it was time for him to live outside. (he was tearing down the inside of my house as fast as I could fix it)

I built him a nice big doggie condo where he set to digging to China and chewing all the brush down around him.

As the years passed he developed and unconditional bond. I did extensive research on thr breed too look for anything out of the norm.

He loved everyone and everyone loved him, when they realized that a dog of his size wouldn't bite.

One day I noticed he was not his chipper self when I exited the house to go to work. I went to him and he was not able to stand. I ran back inside, called in sick to work, loaded him in my truck and rushed to the best vet.

They rushed him and found that he had a blockage in his bladder. The vet said they were going to releave the bladder pressure throught side. I watch as they worked. The vet said he would have died from internal poisoning within the day if I had not brought him. The next step was to find out why he had a blockage. My love for Sport meant that the amount of money did not matter when it came to saving my comfidant.

I went with them to the operating room as they prepared him. I am real good friends with the vet and was allowed to watch. As they gave him an IV, I passed out cold. I woke up where I had fallen as they were finishing up.

When I regained my senses, I was told Sport had over six hundred bladder stones.

He lived on the meet Kelly and my beloved mountains and, to retire.

I must admit Marie, after reading your post amd writing mine I teared up.

Yesterday Kelly amd I went to look at a new house. The house was next to a large fenced in yard. While searching for the corners of the property lines, four adult pit bulldogs charged at me with the intent to do bodily harm. I stood me ground as they bounced off the fence seperating us (good thing for them, I bite as well).

Out of no where this little beagle came up behind me and with a booming bark had me looking for a tree to climb. After I realized it was a friendly bark I tried to touch him. At this time he began running around me like a little idiot.

I played with this little goofball until Kelly got mad and yelled for me to come on.

The house is out because of the bulldogs, but I definately liked the little beagle.

* When Bud starts soiling in the house etc. It won't be because he is behaving badly, Merr... The vet explained to my friend (MWW), whose dog had cancer, that she would be loosing control of her bladder etc., and would be sooo embarrassed that she was doing this to the folks she loved. Star was a Golden and being a big dog, her life line was less than a small dog anyway.

Unfortunately, very few people have animal medical insurance, and their vet care is extremely costly. Please let me help if you will, to afford "Bud" the care you and Rob deem appropriate to make him kick this nasty thing or be more comfortable. (Wicket sends his best to his pal too, and is so sad...)

I remember when you and Rob stayed with me in Vegas and returned to find him missing. OMG...You knew and I KNEW then how much you loved Buddy. Thank goodness you found him.

Dogs provide that special something called "UNCONDITIONAL" love, which amazes me. My Wicket gets made at me when I have to leave him at home. He nips at my ankles and then he kisses all over and shows me he loves me anyway. He almost talks it seems when I am sad and forlorn.

Our family has had to face two breast cancer losses in our big dogs, Heather and her daughter, Sarah at 10 years old each, as you know. That day was one of the hardest. We had four dogs then and then there were two.

Stay strong, and maybe he will surprise us all and keep doing "the hump" damce to make you smile...

xoxoxo

Thank you. Buddy's doing very well right now. We'll have to see how he does after his surgery. I'll be doing some heavy praying.

But for now, Buddy and Jack are getting more attention and pampering from Rob and me. It's just appreciating them for being part of our life. Buddy is a little confused with all the fuss Rob and I are giving him. I could swear that I saw Buddy roll his eyes when I was hugging and petting him, and when I told him I loved him over and over again. Buddy was probably thinking, "Mommy, STOP already!" LOL!

Buddy is a trooper. He's going to be fine. But acceptance is the key to moving on with life. I'm leaving it up to God. There is only so much we human beings can do.

>How's he doin'?

Buddy is doing well. He had his surgery yesterday morning, and Rob picked him up later in the afternoon. The doctor said that Buddy is restricted from vigorous activities and walking up and down the stairs for at least 2 weeks. So, poor Jack has to be kept away from Buddy, because they're pretty rough with each other when they play.

Buddy was in pain last night and today. He would take a few steps, and he would sit back down looking scared and uncomfortable. But otherwise, he's doing well.

I gave him some children's Motrin today for the pain, and he seems to be a little bit more active right now. I just took him out to go potty, and he dragged me across the street. So, I have to say that he's feeling a little better.

He's got a pretty big incision on his tummy. It's shaped like an upside down "Y". I estimate that, if you measure it all together, his incision is about 8 to 10 inches. Poor thing. His tummy kinda looks like a football with all the stiches.

Rob and I will find out the result of the biopsy. Although, we sort of already know the result. His stitches will be removed on Sept. 8th.

We are crossing our fingers that he recovers fast so that he can play fight with Jack again.

This is a pic of the budster the day after his surgery... tried to walk him to go potty, but he preferred to sit on a patch of grass.

You can't see his big scar in this photo. It is better that way.

Well, Buddy had a little set back. He developed an infection around the incision area, and Rob had to take him back to the vet today to get some antibiotics and pain medication. So, needless to say, Buddy is feeling icky. We've put a cone around his head so that he wouldn't lick the infected area.

Rob and I are crossing our fingers that he recovers and gets better soon.

Infection looked better today. Bud is on the dog equivalent of Cipro. If there's another Anthrax scare, Buddy will be safe.

Great to hear. We have a friend whose 14 year old kitty went into kidney failure and to the tune of $2500.00 will be okay for now. Thats the problem with animals.....how much do you spend on them?
I guess you wouldnt put them on life support but anything short of that. Its a painful decision sometimes.

Yeah, it's sometimes hard to think of the right thing to do sometimes. But pets are like children. They're helpless unless you help them. The return of their unconditional love, however, is just priceless!

Buddy looks so pretty with a red, transparent cone around his head. He looks like a little flower. But he hates the cone so much. When you look at him, his facial expression says, "Get this thing OFF of me!" LOL!

He's slowly getting better. He still has an infection that seems to be drying up a little bit. But there's still a portion of his tummy that is raw.

Well, our little Butster is feeling much better. His infection is gone, but I'm still making him take his antibiotics until it's all gone. Also, the infection site and his incisions have scabbed. So now, our problem is to keep Buddy from scratching, licking and biting the areas. The cone will stay on him until his skin has completely cleared. He's not happy about the cone, but it's for his own good!

Yup. Unfortunately, two of the three masses were malignant. The good news is that they are low-spread types of malignancy. Marie and I have decided that we want to leave Bud with his dignity, so we will not be subjecting him to chemo.

He is doing great, though, after his surgery.

Yesterday was the true meter for this...

Some of you might know that Bud has a strange middle name. It is "Wannub."

Buddy "Wannub" Reed received that nickname immediately after he introduced himself to me at the pet shop. We were able to point him out of the window and get him into a private area. As I was standing over him, I looked down at his cute face, and I couldn't resist myself in trying to pat his head.

Buddy had another idea. Seeing my arm move towards the top of his head, he quickly leaped, grasped my forearm most efficiently, and began humping it like it was the most beautiful poodle's behind that he had ever seen.

"We have to have him," I said, turning to Marie with her "you have got to be f***ing kidding me" look on her face.

So, last night, we are taking him and Jack out for a walk... Buddy walked out with me first, and I turned to the front door as we waited for Marie to bring out Jack.

Jack and Bud eyed each other from a distance for a few seconds, and then Buddy ran over to Jack. If it was slow-motion, it would have looked like a scene of long lost lovebirds, running along a sandy beach, longingly reaching for a warm embrace...

...only this one ended with Buddy grasping Jack's front forearm and humping it voraciously.

"He's back," I thought, as I told him to get the hell off his brother.

Sorry to hear your Buddy has cancer. How slow moving is it? My dad was diagnosed with a slow moving type 20 years ago and hes still...well he doesnt hump arms but he's frisky.

LOL!!!!!!! That sounds like my dad and stepmom's dog. Lambchop (yep that was his name ), was a big, white standard french poodle. He used to love humping people's legs, but only the men!

Regarding Buddy's labs: That sounds like a similar carcinoma to what Sophie had. We also decided not to try chemo or radiation. Frankly, the doctor didn't offer that as an option, probably due to Sophie's age. He said she should do well, but that the growth would eventually grow back. It took about two years and it finally did. If I would have had it all to do over, I would have taken her back to the vet when I first noticed the growth coming back. Maybe the surgery would not have had to have been so extensive at that point, though he may still have not wanted to do it due to age. I don't know. In any case, she lived very well for at least 3 more years with no problems.

We would be grateful and lucky if we'd have Buddy for another 3 years. He's such a joy! He's back to his old self. You would never know that he had surgery, except for his scars. But, because he's being walked 3 to 4 times a day, he's looking pretty good. He's firming up his scarred tummy nicely!

Because he's a house dog now, he sleeps in the house with us as well. You would think that there's a snoring contest going on between Rob and Buddy every night! JOY!

Glad to hear "The Budster" is back to his old self. Give him an extra cookie from me

Yep, Sophie used to snore, even louder than me. I think it has something to do with a dog's aging process. She never did it when she was young. Besides, it beats what comes out the opposite end sometimes!

LOL... you said it! When The Budster would toot, he'd quickly clear out a room.

I wonder if Buddy is feeling better ever. The other night, Rob and I were playing around when Buddy suddenly jumped on my leg and started humping it! He's never done that before. He'd always go after Rob's forearm. He's a strange nut ball.

Glad to hear Buddy's doing better, even if he is turning into a dirty old man
