It seems 9/11 has had a significant impact in the adoption world. Our agency tells us that around the country, activity at agencies has slowed to a crawl. People in unintended pregnancies are choosing to parent in a much higher proportion than they did pre 9/11. As the number of potential birthmothers shrinks, the waiting pool at our agency swells. Our counselors theorize there is now this collective need we have to be connected to something greater than ourselves.

We could be in for a very long wait.

Obviously, NOT a happy message for our family. But for the sake of humanity and their survival, it is somewhat uplifting. Only time will tell.

This was how things were about 3 years ago -- in the year or two after 9/11. I haven't heard any lasting effects from the adoption counselors I've spoken with, so perhaps the right situation is right around the corner...fingers crossed.
