Cleanup L.A.: This Saturday

I am not sure I will be able to make it, but I'm going to post it on my blog if anyone is interested.

From Pastor Dana at my church website at firstlutheran.org (heavily under construction right now by yours truly):

Cleanup L.A. is coming June 21st. We are working with the LAPD in the Van Nuys Division as we clean alleys and pray for people. We work with other churches in the Valley to bless the city.

The police chief and the mayor now are intrigued. What is this all about? What is this "In The City For Good" all about? When we meet people in the neighborhoods we work in, they are shocked that Christians are working together and that we care enough to bless the city.

If you don't get why we are blessing our city in this way, go to Jeremiah 29:7. It can't get any clearer.

And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.

Here is what you get to do.

Rake, hoe and pick up trash to beautify a neighborhood where they think Christians are a bunch of closed-minded freaks.

Some of us will choose to go door-to-door and simply pray with people. Last time we did this, every single home asked for prayer except one, who politely declined.

So, do you think this might be a good way to let an extremely skeptical city know that Christians actually want to follow Jesus?

You decide.

This might be the beginning of something really good for the valley. We had a Men's Breakfast earlier this year (which on its best days would get 15 or so guys), but we went multi-church with the churches that will be participating in this program, and there were at least 150 men who showed up.

Cool.

I think the church we have been going t, Shepherd of the Hills, was also involved either in that or something very similar.

Yup... I am pretty sure Shepherd of the Hills was there, too... it was one heckuva hot day and a lower turnout than usual (so I heard --this was my first)... but I think they're (LAPD and city council people and local pastors) are hoping that this gets bigger and bigger.

God bless you for helping out. Having worked in a gang area of Van Nuys for several years, I know how vital this effort is. I'll try to join in the next time.

Thanks, Larry... I'll make sure to put up a reminder next time (I think it restarts in the winter, fortunately).

That's good... I'm not a "heat" person
