Why Not Have A U.S. Foreign Legion???
3/27/06, 10:41pm
I thought of this today in a rather tongue and cheek fashion but it kind of made some sense and seemed to strike a chord in some discussions. It may not be P.C. but it is a thought.

What if we had a U.S. Foreign Legion? In exchange for ten years of service one would gain legitimate U.S. Citizenship. One could pay their dues to their newly adopted country as a price for citizenship. The other standard means of immigration and gaining citizenship would remain in effect too. If one were found in country illegally then they could be given the option of leaving or joining the Legion.

The service would be a new branch of the military whose ranks could be drawn from to support the other branches and to provide much needed manpower.

Any thoughts on the matter???

Perhaps a similar branch of service could be used as an option for lower grade criminal behavior too as a means of purging one's debt to society.

Thoughts???

Sounds reasonable. Actually the United States Army did offer citizenship to those that served in the Viet Nam era, should they wish to apply. The terms were much less time served. I know one that did not pursue that, but choose to go throught he regular doors sometime later.

It is a beautiful plan Roberto! BTW, it will probably never happen. I think it is a solid idea, but many would view this as politically incorrect.

I can hear the liberals now, "They're government sponsored mercenaries!"
