Ex-Vice President Candidate Eagleton Dies
By JIM SALTER
AP

Former Senator Tom Eagleton resigned in 1972 as a vice president candidate.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (March 4) - Former U.S. Sen. Thomas Eagleton, who resigned as a vice presidential nominee in 1972 after it was revealed he had been hospitalized for depression, died Sunday, said a spokeswoman for Sen. Claire McCaskill.

The cause of death was not disclosed. McCaskill spokeswoman Adrianne Marsh said the family was expected to issue a statement later Sunday.

"Today Missouri has a hole in its heart," McCaskill said in a statement. "Tom Eagleton managed to be a statesman, an intellectual and a man of the people all at the same time."

Eagleton, 77, had suffered from a variety of illnesses and ailments in recent years.

He served in the Senate representing Missouri from December 1968 through January 1987.

He was George McGovern's vice presidential nominee in 1972, but dropped out after it was revealed that he had been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment and had twice undergone electroshock therapy for depression.

I remember him. I guess the 1972 election was his 15 minutes of fame. I remember Sen. McGovern saying at the time he was behind Sen. Eagleton "110%" and then two days later he was off the ticket. One of my government teachers in high school said, "I guess 110% wasn't enough."

Before OJ's time! lol I have often wondered why we feel we need to add more than the possible? e.g. over 100% or 8 day week, 0r 25 hou5s a day!

Even then, I had empathy for Eagleton. Loved McGovern until he gave in to the political pressure and removed Eagleton from the ticket. McGovern lost anyway. Imagine if we had television and such media interference in FDRs day, do you think he would have been reelected due to his obvious handicap.

I felt sorry for him too. He seemed like he would be a good VP.

Looking back, and considering where my political views are now, I can't believe I was a McGovern supporter in '72! Things change when you start paying taxes, I guess

I never changed my political beliefs except that the two main parties don't seem that different any more
