Wounded Knee, revisited

I have lived in the U.S. since the Mid. 60s, politically I was More to "the left", now, I think, "more to the middle", at least I think so.

As a person who has always been interested in Politics/History, and retained knowlege of things I was interested in, I do not forget injusticies.

The subject of "Wounded Knee", has been brought up by others, notably Canty, and Levy.

I happen to think that this episode of U.S. history is something that most would rather forget, or "sweep under the carpet", and pretend it did not happen.

Some have called for Reparations to be given to "peoples" who have experienced injustice in this country over the last 300 years., if that is so, it would apply particularly to the Indiginous peoples, who were here before all others.

That is why "Wounded Knee", comes to mind.

Native American "Indians", have rarely "risen up" to protest the injusticies, inflicted on them., more numerous than I could mention.

In light of this I wonder why it is ,that one of the leaders of A.I.M. (American Indian Movement)Russell Means, is still in Jail.

During the commemoration of "Wounded Knee" during the "mid 70s, "so called radical Indians", returned to "the battle site".

A confrontation ensued and their was loss of life.
It is a fact that Means was not directly responsible for killing anyone, I believe this was 1974., yet he remains in Jail, having had a death sentence commuted to life.

The reason I raise the issue politically is that I believe his sentence should have been commuted long ago.

At the end of the Clinton Presidency, the name of Russell Means was "thrust" in to the "presidential commutation list", as a worthy person "to be set free".

Instead Clinton overlooked Means, and set free an extortionist, drug/gunrunner, tax cheat, named Rich., his wife in his "overseas absence" had continued to "funnel money" to BOTH Bill as well as Hilarys prospective senate campaign., perhaps using "some of the illgotten gains".

Rich was given a "full pardon", Means continues to "rot in Jail".

The refusal to commute Means sentence has been used by a number of "potential Clinton supporters", in their decision NOT to support HER.!!!, notably in the " so called Hollywood support", principally David Geffen"----- in the aftermath of this, Hillary stated"WE will NOT forget those who were again'st us",----(Such a Lovely Lady).
Add this to the fact that she would "like to regulate talk radio, and the internet",VERY SCARY , she even LOOKS like AHalloween Mask.

(Is'nt regulation of the Internet, what they are presently doing in China, as well as the country of BURMA, (the country it's dictators call Myanmar, yes the same country that is killing "unarmed Buddhist monks on a daily basis, many of us are oblivious to this, yet it has been going on in Burma for the last 40 years, how many, know where Burma is, or have even heard of it's existence, very few I suspect., and that is one of the reasons for ignoring genocide, they do NOT have Oil there, like Rwanda or Darfur(Sudan).

In the next couple of years Pres. Bush will get a chance to "right a wrong", he probably will not, as well as giving a pardon to a "couple of U.S. Border Patrol officers, who continue to "rot in jail", for "doing their job".

Well at least the Indians are getting back at us through casinos now

I think there would be a signifcant backlash if Means had his sentence commuted. If memory serves, I think he was convicted of killing either and FBI agent or a Federal Marshall.

I guess I am ignorant/oblivious to what all has transpired here. I guess I need to do some research

I do not believe Means actually killed anyone, however taking in the perspective of the "historical time period", I.E. Nixon presidency, "Black Panthers", radical groups "popping up" every where ,e.g. "La Raza", and even John Lennon being a threat to the government ----all kinds of perceived paranoia was taking place, some of which may have been warranted, (surely not John), however , I believe MOST was not, and the U.S was MORE threatened by the actions of "a paranoid President".

There was a deliberate intent to silence opposition, and maintain the "status quo", this "perceived paranoia" even resulted in a "break in" at the headquarters of the democratic party, to try to find evidence that would be prejudicial to democratic candidates, and ensure a Nixon victory, it was called the "WATERGATE break in".

You're probably right. Those were paranoid days.
