Perfect Jury Duty Excuse
11/16/04, 4:58am
From "This is True":

After Michael J. McDermott received a summons to appear as a juror for a drunk driving trial in Somers, N.Y., he realized it conflicted with an important work engagement. He wrote the Jury Commissioner asking for a deferral, citing an excuse the Commissioner probably hadn't heard before: "I will be ineligible to serve," McDermott wrote, "as I am the presiding judge on this case." Unfortunately for Judge McDermott, that is not among the officially allowable excuses to get out of jury duty in New York. However, the Commissioner granted him a deferral anyway.

Yep.......same goes for here in Los Angeles. I know of a Judge who couldn't get out of jury duty. In the end he found it very interesting to be in the box to the right instead of front and center.
